About Latvia

Why visit Latvia

Riga combines a medieval centre, Art Nouveau districts and a large central market with quick access to the beach at Jūrmala. Farther out, Cēsis and Sigulda open the Gauja valley, while Kuldīga and Liepāja give western Latvia a different pace.

The main rail and coach routes are useful, but they do not turn every coast and national park into an easy day trip. Western Latvia and the Cape Kolka area work better with a regional base or a car.

Plan Latvia by region

Riga is the natural base, with easy public-transport extensions to Jūrmala, Sigulda and several regional towns. Kurzeme’s coast, Latgale’s lakes and the far west require more time and a deliberate transport plan.

Rail covers selected corridors rather than the whole country. Intercity buses fill many gaps, while a car gives the greatest flexibility for Cape Kolka, Slītere and dispersed lake or manor routes.

Choose a part of the country

Choose a region

Riga Region

Riga’s Art Nouveau and medieval centre with rail-linked Jūrmala and the lower Daugava region. Use Riga’s urban transport and Vivi trains for Jūrmala. Reserve a car only for dispersed regional sites.

View region

Vidzeme

Castle towns, sandstone valleys and forested Gauja National Park northeast of Riga. Vivi reaches Sigulda and Cēsis. A car helps link trailheads and rural estates across the park.

View region

Kurzeme

Western Latvia’s broad region of Kuldīga, Liepāja, Ventspils and the Livonian coast. Coaches join the main towns; a car is valuable for Cape Kolka, Slītere and smaller coast settlements.

View region

Zemgale

Southern Latvia’s palace, agricultural and river landscapes, anchored by Bauska, Rundāle and Jelgava. Use coaches from Riga. Rundāle may require a Bauska transfer, so confirm both legs.

View region

Latgale

Eastern Latvia’s lake country, Catholic and craft traditions, and distinct Latgalian cultural identity. Trains and coaches reach Daugavpils and Rēzekne. A car is strongly useful for lakes and rural cultural sites.

Match the route to your time

Choose a trip length

3–5 days

Riga and one easy excursion

Give Riga two or three days, then add Jūrmala, Sigulda or Cēsis by public transport. A short break should not attempt the far western coast or Latgale, which require longer transfers and their own base.

6–8 days

Riga, Gauja and the west

Combine Riga with Sigulda or Cēsis, then continue to Kuldīga or Liepāja. Use two regional bases and check the current bus or rail link instead of trying to return to Riga after every outing. Keep two full Riga days.

10–14 days

Add coast or lake country

Follow the central and western route, then choose Cape Kolka or Latgale. A car makes dispersed nature stops easier, while a public-transport route needs fewer places and careful return times. Stay within one wider region.

Ready-made routes

Suggested itineraries

7 days, 6 nights

Riga, Sigulda and Cēsis in 7 days

Seven days combine Riga with Sigulda and Cēsis by rail, giving the capital three nights and the Gauja valley two distinct bases.

Main stops
Riga, Sigulda, Cēsis
Transport
Train, Bus, Walking
Best suited to
Visitors who want a capital and Gauja heritage without renting a car.
Main trade-off
Public transport reaches the gateways, but not every national-park trailhead between them.

8 days, 7 nights

Kurzeme coast road trip in 8 days

Eight days link Kuldīga, Liepāja and Ventspils on a western Latvia route, leaving remote Cape Kolka for an optional extra day.

Main stops
Kuldīga, Liepāja, Ventspils
Transport
Bus, Walking, Bicycle
Best suited to
Coast and small-city travellers comfortable with dated regional coaches.
Main trade-off
Liepāja to Ventspils is a slow regional leg, and Cape Kolka still needs a separate car or sparse bus plan.

7 days, 6 nights

Latgale cities and lakes in 7 days

Seven days combine Daugavpils and Rēzekne with a planned base in the Latgale lake district, where a car or arranged transfer is most useful.

Main stops
Daugavpils, Rēzekne, Latgale Lake District
Transport
Train, Bus, Car, Walking
Best suited to
Travellers interested in eastern Latvian culture who can add a short car rental for the lakes.
Main trade-off
The final lake section loses flexibility without a car and cannot be treated as a generic public-transport loop.

10 days, 9 nights

Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius in 10 days

Ten days give Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius three nights each, with the dated international rail arrangements confirmed before booking around them.

Main stops
Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius
Transport
Train, Bus, Local Transport, Walking
Best suited to
First-time Baltic visitors who prefer a rail-led capital route with no car.
Main trade-off
Both international trains run on limited daily patterns, so delays or timetable changes require a coach fallback.

Transport choices

Getting around Latvia

Vivi trains connect Riga with Jūrmala, Sigulda, Cēsis, Jelgava, Daugavpils and selected regional centres. Intercity buses serve more towns and often provide the practical cross-country link. Riga’s local network covers the capital. A car helps on the Kurzeme coast, around Cape Kolka and in Latgale, where attractions and accommodation can sit far from a station. Weekend rural departures can be much less frequent.

Rail

Use Vivi for the corridors it serves and check current notices before travel. Tickets may require validation, so read the operator’s current instructions rather than relying on an older account of the system.

Intercity buses

Buses reach many towns outside the rail network and can be the more direct option. Confirm the terminal, date and evening return before using a rural place as a day trip.

City transport

Riga’s tram, trolleybus and bus network covers the main districts. Keep a practical transfer margin between the airport, bus station and rail station when connecting separate tickets.

Driving

A car helps with Cape Kolka, Slītere and Latgale’s lake country. It is unnecessary in central Riga. Check road conditions, wildlife risk and accommodation access before planning a late rural arrival.

Avoid the common route problems

Planning checks

Check the final rural connection

A train or bus may reach the regional town without reaching the coast, park entrance or accommodation. Plan the final kilometres and return before booking a nature day around a general destination name. Weekend frequency can be considerably lower.

Give the west enough time

Liepāja, Kuldīga, Ventspils and Cape Kolka do not form a quick loop by public transport. Choose two useful bases or drive a slower route instead of returning to Riga between every western stop. At least three nights makes the detour worthwhile.

Use seasonal daylight well

Long summer days suit coast and park routes, while winter makes rural travel and outdoor stops less forgiving. Keep colder-season itineraries city-led unless there is a specific nature plan and suitable transport. Recheck park access after heavy weather.

Quick answers

Planning questions

How many days work for Riga and the countryside?

Spend three days in Riga, then allow two or three nights for Gauja or western Latvia. A week is enough for the capital and one clear regional section.

Can I visit Jūrmala without a car?

Yes. Trains from Riga serve several Jūrmala districts, so choose the station that matches the beach or architecture walk you want.

Should I stay in Cēsis or Sigulda?

Sigulda is convenient for a day trip and the valley’s main sights. Cēsis is better for a quieter overnight base and a wider look at northern Gauja.

What needs a car in western Latvia?

A car helps when linking Kuldīga, Liepāja, Ventspils and Cape Kolka. Public transport can work, but the timetable may force a much narrower route.
