About Kurzeme
Why explore Kurzeme
Kurzeme holds Latvia’s strongest western route, pairing an exceptional small town with two distinct port cities and a sparsely developed national-park coast.
The distances make selection important. A southern trip around Liepāja and Kuldīga differs from a northern route through Ventspils toward Cape Kolka.
Plan the region
Start with Kuldīga and one coastal city on a short trip. Add the northern Livonian coast only when an overnight, car or verified bus return makes the remote section comfortable.
Intercity buses link the principal towns, but service days and regional changes matter. Rail should be checked as a current option, not assumed from the map.

4 guidesKuldīga
Kuldīga is a small western Latvian town where historic streets, the Alekšupīte and the broad Venta waterfall meet within a compact centre.
Open guideLiepāja
Liepāja is a west-coast city with a walkable centre, a broad beach and the large former military district of Karosta to the north.
Open guideVentspils
Ventspils is a compact port city where a medieval castle, landscaped public spaces, a family beach and working harbour sit close together.
Open guideCape Kolka and Slītere National Park
Cape Kolka is a natural gateway to Slītere National Park and the Livonian coast, but the wider area needs more than a quick stop at the cape.

Plan by area
Kuldīga
The UNESCO old town, Venta waterfall and bridge form a compact inland stop that deserves a full day.
Liepāja and the south
A cultural city, broad beach and the separate Karosta district create a two-day coastal base.
Ventspils and northern coast
Ventspils provides city services before the thinner road and transport network around Cape Kolka and Slītere.

Kuldīga sits inland, the two cities face the Baltic, and Cape Kolka anchors a much quieter northern coast.
Match the route to your time
What fits into your trip
Kuldīga and one coast
Spend one full day in Kuldīga and two in Liepāja or Ventspils. This gives the town and chosen city proper time without turning the third day into a long transfer across the whole region.
A southern or northern route
Pair Kuldīga with Liepāja for the south, or Ventspils with Cape Kolka for the north. Keep one night close to the coast so poor bus timing or wind does not control every stop.
Western Latvia in depth
Link all three towns, then spend two nights around the Livonian coast. Leave one date flexible for beach weather, park access or a slow museum day, and avoid changing accommodation every night along the route.
Link the stops sensibly
Routes and day trips
Build either a southern loop through Kuldīga and Liepāja or a northern route through Ventspils and Cape Kolka before attempting the full region.
Suggested regional routes
Kuldīga old town
Walk the UNESCO centre and Venta river at a slower pace, then continue by bus or road.
Open destination guideLiepāja and Karosta
Separate the centre and beach from the spread-out former military district.
Open destination guideVentspils to Cape Kolka
Use Ventspils for supplies and the castle, then stay closer to the park for trails and villages.

Kurzeme coast road trip in 8 days
Eight days link Kuldīga, Liepāja and Ventspils on a western Latvia route, leaving remote Cape Kolka for an optional extra day.
Choose transport by destination
Getting around Kurzeme
Buses connect the principal towns. A car or arranged transfer becomes increasingly useful north of Ventspils and around Slītere.
Intercity buses
Check each leg and service day through the national journey planner before fixing accommodation.
Driving
A car supports the remote coast, but protected areas, minor roads and parking still require care.
Coastal return
Secure the final bus, fuel or overnight before spending the day around Cape Kolka.
Choose dates that suit the route
When to visit
Summer gives the broadest coastal programme. Late spring and early autumn can be quieter but have fewer seasonal services.
Wind, rough water and storms can alter beaches, fort ruins and park trails. Keep an indoor town alternative.

Planning checks
Do not cross the region every day
Use a southern or northern base and move only when the route changes.
Secure remote-coast supplies
Fuel, food and public transport are limited around the Livonian coast.
Respect unstable coastal ruins
Karosta fortifications and eroding structures require barriers and managed access.
Quick answers
Questions about Kurzeme
How long does Kurzeme need?
Five days supports one coherent route. A week or more is better for both coastal cities and Cape Kolka.
Can I travel by bus?
Yes between the main towns. The remote northern coast needs closer timetable planning.
Which city should I choose?
Liepāja offers a larger cultural stay. Ventspils suits families and the northern route.
Is Cape Kolka a quick stop?
No. Its remote location and nearby Slītere landscapes reward a dedicated day or overnight.
