About Hungary
Why visit Hungary
Budapest can anchor a full city break with its Danube views, museums, markets and thermal baths. Beyond the capital, Eger, Pécs and Szeged offer distinct regional cities, while Lake Balaton adds vineyards, resort towns and seasonal lake travel.
A first journey works best with Budapest and one regional direction. Eger and the Danube Bend fit shorter routes, while Pécs, the Great Plain and western Lake Balaton need more travel time than their position on the map suggests.
Plan Hungary by region
Budapest deserves several days, but Hungary also supports compact rail routes to Eger, Pécs, Szeged, Győr and Sopron. Lake Balaton, the Danube Bend, Tokaj and Hortobágy add different regional choices.
Choose one regional extension around the season and transport. A lake stay, wine region and eastern plain do not fit the same short route, even though each can be reached from Budapest.
Choose a part of the country
Choose a region
Danube Bend
Treat Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom as different stops linked by rail, bus or seasonal boats. Use rail on both banks, regional buses and dated boat services. A car is optional.
View regionLake Balaton
Choose the north shore for wine and heritage or the south shore for beaches and easy rail, then select a town base. Rail and buses cover the shores, with dated BAHART services. A car helps away from the shoreline.

Lake Fertő
Lake Ferto is a shallow cross-border lake of reed beds, wetland habitats, historic villages and cycling routes shared by Hungary and Austria.

A full Danube Bend day from Budapest combining Visegrád’s riverside palace with the hilltop castle when local transport and weather cooperate.
Esztergom from Budapest
A rail day from Budapest focused on Esztergom’s basilica, castle hill and Danube crossing to Štúrovo when time permits.
Hortobágy from Debrecen
A carefully timed day from Debrecen using the train to Hortobágy village and one programme confirmed with the national park.
Tihany from Balatonfüred
A full day from Balatonfüred for Tihany’s abbey village, Inner Lake and one peninsula walk chosen for the weather.
Match the route to your time
Choose a trip length
Budapest and the Danube Bend
Give Budapest four days, then add Szentendre, Visegrád or Esztergom with a confirmed rail, bus or boat plan. Choose one or two Bend stops rather than trying to cover the whole river section in a single rushed day.
Budapest and one regional city
Link Budapest with Eger, Pécs or Szeged by rail and stay at least two nights. This allows a distinct city experience and one nearby outing without carrying luggage through several similar one-night stops. Keep four nights for Budapest.
West, lake or wine route
Combine Budapest with Lake Balaton and western cities, or follow an eastern route through Eger and Tokaj. Seasonal lake services and rural links need a dated plan, so keep the itinerary within one side of the country.

Transport choices
Getting around Hungary
MÁV rail and bus services connect Budapest with regional cities, Lake Balaton and many smaller centres. Budapest’s metro, trams and buses remove the need for a car in the capital. River boats are seasonal rather than a complete transport backbone. A car helps with dispersed wine villages and parts of the countryside, but the principal city route remains practical by public transport.
Rail
Use trains for Budapest, Eger, Pécs, Szeged, Győr and Sopron when the route fits. Check current disruption information and any reservation requirement before building a fixed day around one service.
Regional buses
Buses complete journeys around Lake Balaton, the Danube Bend and rural districts. Confirm the exact stop and evening return, especially on weekends and outside the main visitor season.
City and river transport
Budapest’s metro and tram system covers the main districts. River services can be useful or scenic in season, but verify the current operator and timetable rather than treating them as an ordinary year-round route.
Driving
A car supports wine villages, Hortobágy and a dispersed lake itinerary. It is unnecessary in central Budapest. Collect it after the capital stay and confirm vignette, parking and local alcohol rules before driving.
Month-by-month planning
When to visit
Hungary combines year-round city and thermal-bath trips with a shorter Lake Balaton, boating and countryside season.

Avoid the common route problems
Planning checks
Give Budapest enough time
The city’s two riverbanks, major museums, thermal baths and neighbourhoods cannot be reduced to a transit stop. Protect three or four full days before adding a regional circuit, then group daily plans by district. Evening riverfront time should not become another transfer.
Check seasonal lake services
Boats, resort buses and lakeside businesses can follow seasonal calendars. Confirm the exact week and avoid building a transfer around a ferry or service that appears only in a general summer description. Keep a rail-based alternative for quieter dates.
Reserve baths and major events sensibly
Popular thermal baths, festivals and race weekends can affect both access and accommodation. Check official conditions and fix only the genuinely constrained entry, leaving the rest of the city schedule flexible. Prices and opening arrangements can change on event dates.

Balatonfüred vs Tihany
Balatonfüred is the better base for most car-free lake stays. Tihany is the better short choice when views, the abbey and peninsula paths matter most.
Quick answers
Planning questions
How long should I spend in Budapest?
Three or four full days cover the main districts without rushing. Add another day for Szentendre, Gödöllő or a slower museum and bath day.
What is the easiest regional addition to Budapest?
Eger works well for a historic town and wine region, while the Danube Bend suits a day trip. Lake Balaton deserves several nights if it is more than a brief stop.
Can I tour Hungary by public transport?
Yes for Budapest, Eger, Pécs, Szeged and the main Lake Balaton towns. Rural wineries, national parks and some village routes are easier with a car or arranged transfer.
Is Lake Balaton only a summer destination?
Summer brings the widest lake services and busiest resorts. Spring and autumn suit walking, cycling and wine areas, but ferry and local transport frequencies need checking.
