When you visit the website
A page request includes technical information such as your IP address, browser details, requested address, time and referring page when the browser supplies one. The web server, hosting and security systems may process this information to deliver pages, prevent misuse and diagnose faults.
The application does not start a visitor account or application session on the public pages. Server and infrastructure logs are kept according to the operational and security settings of the services running the site. Discover Europe does not use those records to build advertising profiles.
Information you send by email
When you email us, we receive your email address, message and any attachments you choose to send. We use them to reply, investigate the issue and keep an appropriate record of the enquiry.
Include only the information needed for the question. Do not send passwords, payment-card details, passport copies or other unnecessary sensitive information.
Trip-planning information
The route planner works with destination names, coordinates, travel dates, stop order, nights and transport choices. When you ask it to show a route, the browser sends the current plan to Discover Europe so the server can calculate the schedule, distances and planning checks. The application returns the result without creating an account or a separate saved trip record.
If a place has no stored coordinates, its name is sent to Discover Europe and then to Nominatim, operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation to find a matching location. Successful place-name results may be cached by Discover Europe for up to 30 days so the same search does not need another provider request.
Routes saved on your device
Save on this device stores one route in your browser local storage. The saved copy can include the start date, destination names and codes, coordinates, nights, transport choices and planning details shown for each stop. It is not synchronised to an account.
The saved route remains until you replace it or remove this website's stored data through your browser settings. Clear in the planner removes the working draft and keeps the saved copy. Removing the saved copy does not erase a share link that someone else already has.
Optional location access
Use current location asks your browser for permission and places the returned coordinates in the first stop. If you then show the route, those coordinates are sent to Discover Europe with the other stops. If you save the route, they are also stored in that browser's local storage.
You can plan with a city name instead. Change future location access in your browser's site-permission settings. Discover Europe does not create a continuing location history from this feature.
Maps, place search and optional videos
Interactive maps use configured map tiles, currently OpenStreetMap by default. Loading a map makes requests from your browser to the tile provider, which receives ordinary connection information and the tiles needed for the visible map area.
A destination video starts as a local placeholder. Discover Europe does not load the YouTube player until you press Play video. The player uses youtube-nocookie.com, but YouTube can still receive connection and device information and may use cookies or other storage after activation. You can keep the video off by not pressing Play, or stop it by leaving or reloading the page.
Why information is processed
Technical requests and planner inputs are processed to provide the website and the features you request. Security and diagnostic information is processed to protect the service and correct faults. Enquiry information is processed to answer you and manage the resulting correspondence.
These activities support the legitimate interests of operating a useful, secure website and responding to readers. Optional location access and YouTube playback begin only after your action. Information may also be used where needed to meet a legal obligation or deal with a legal claim.
Service providers and other recipients
Hosting, security and email providers may process the limited information needed to provide those services. Map and video providers receive information as described above. The geocoding provider receives place-name searches from the Discover Europe server, rather than directly from your browser.
These providers may process information in countries outside your own and apply their own privacy terms where they act independently. Information may also be disclosed when required by law or for a legal claim.
How long information is kept
A saved route and the external-video preference remain in your browser local storage until you clear them. Cached geocoding results can remain on the Discover Europe server for up to 30 days. No separate server record is created for a planned or shared route.
Technical and security logs are kept for the period needed to operate, secure and diagnose the service under the applicable server and provider settings. Emails are kept while needed to answer the enquiry, handle related follow-up and meet any record-keeping or legal requirement. We do not publish a fixed period where the current operating settings do not establish one.
Your privacy rights
Depending on the law and circumstances, you may ask for access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of your personal information. You may also object to certain processing or withdraw a permission you previously gave.
Email [email protected] with Privacy in the subject line. We may ask for proportionate information to confirm that the request concerns you. You can also complain to the data-protection authority in the country where you live, work or believe a problem occurred.
Automated decisions
The planner provides travel suggestions and calculations. It does not make legal or similarly significant decisions about visitors.
Policy changes
We update this page when relevant features or practices change. The reviewed date identifies the current version.
