About Malta
Why visit Malta
Malta’s small size hides an exceptional concentration of history. Valletta, the Three Cities and Mdina cover very different periods, while prehistoric temples, limestone coves and village festas add reasons to leave the main urban corridor.
Gozo deserves separate time for its towns, coast and slower rhythm. Comino is mainly a managed day visit, and rough seas or summer access controls can affect plans even when the crossing looks short.
Plan Malta by region
Valletta, the Three Cities, Mdina and the main coastal towns fit one Malta base, while Gozo deserves a separate stay when the itinerary allows. Comino is a controlled day outing, not an accommodation base for most trips.
Buses cover the islands but road congestion can stretch short journeys. Ferries often provide the cleaner link between Valletta, the Three Cities, Sliema and Gozo, so build days around actual ports and sailing times.

Plan a day out
Day trips and experiences
Mdina and Rabat from Valletta
A full inland day from Valletta pairing Mdina’s walled streets with one carefully chosen Rabat site.
The Three Cities from Valletta
A harbour day from Valletta using the ferry to Cospicua, then a measured route through Birgu and one second city.
Gozo from Malta Island for one day
A long Gozo day built around the sea crossing, Victoria and no more than one additional island area.
Comino and Blue Lagoon day planning
A Comino day built around an authorised boat, the current Blue Lagoon landing pass and enough margin for sea conditions.
Dingli Cliffs from Valletta
A bus-and-walking day from Valletta using one exposed Dingli coast section and a return completed before dark.
Match the route to your time
Choose a trip length
Malta’s main heritage route
Base near Valletta or a well-connected harbour stop and visit the capital, Three Cities, Mdina and one coast section. Gozo can fit only as a long day, so omit it when the schedule is already full.
Malta with a Gozo stay
Spend four or five nights on Malta and two or three on Gozo. The second base reduces repeated ferry and bus travel and gives Victoria, Dwejra and one village or coast route proper time. Keep the transfer day light.
A slower three-island plan
Explore Malta and Gozo in depth, then add Comino only with the required access arrangement and suitable sea conditions. Keep the final night on the island that provides the dependable airport connection. Retain another coast option.

Suggested itineraries
Valletta, Mdina and the Three Cities in 6 days
Six days of Malta heritage using Valletta as the main base, with focused visits to Mdina, Rabat and the Three Cities.
- Main stops
- Valletta, Mdina, Three Cities
- Transport
- Bus, Ferry, Walking
- Best suited to
- First-time visitors prioritising history, museums and harbour settings.
- Main trade-off
- Short distances still involve hills, congestion, ferry conditions and some unnecessary luggage movement.
Malta Island coast route in 7 days
A seven-day route linking Valletta with the southeast and northwest coasts without treating Malta’s short distances as quick journeys.
- Main stops
- Mellieħa, Marsaxlokk, St Paul’s Bay, Buġibba and Qawra
- Transport
- Bus, Car, Walking
- Best suited to
- Coast travellers who prefer public transport and do not mind changing in Valletta.
- Main trade-off
- The bases do not form a simple direct bus chain, so luggage days are slow.
Gozo without rushing in 5 days
Five days on Gozo with Victoria as the transport anchor and separate outings to the west and north coasts.
- Main stops
- Victoria, also known as Rabat, Gozo, Xlendi, Marsalforn
- Transport
- Bus, Walking, Local Transport
- Best suited to
- Slow travellers interested in island towns, bays and short coastal walks.
- Main trade-off
- The extra hotel moves add luggage friction, so a Victoria-only base is the simpler variant.
Malta and Gozo in 9 days
Nine days split between Valletta and Gozo, with heritage days on Malta Island and three complete days beyond the Gozo ferry.
- Main stops
- Valletta, Victoria, also known as Rabat, Gozo
- Transport
- Ferry, Bus, Walking
- Best suited to
- First-time visitors wanting both the main heritage core and a slower Gozo stay.
- Main trade-off
- The sea crossing is weather dependent and needs a generous onward-connection buffer.
Transport choices
Getting around Malta
Malta Public Transport buses cover the principal towns, beaches and ferry terminals, although congestion can lengthen journeys. Harbour ferries link Valletta with Sliema and the Three Cities, while Gozo Channel connects Malta and Gozo. Comino access uses authorised vessels and a visitor-management system. Driving is on the left, but parking and traffic make a car optional rather than essential. Late-evening connections deserve a separate check.
Buses
Use the official journey planner for the dated route and leave a generous margin during busy road periods. Check the final evening service before staying in a quiet coast or village location.
Harbour ferries
Ferries can avoid slow road journeys between Valletta, Sliema and the Three Cities. Confirm the current timetable and weather status, then keep a bus alternative for a late or disrupted crossing.
Gozo and Comino
Plan Gozo through the actual ferry terminal and onward bus. Comino requires separate transport and current visitor-access arrangements, so a landing pass does not by itself include the boat journey.
Driving
A car adds flexibility in rural Malta and Gozo but brings left-side driving, congestion and difficult parking. A first trip based near good bus and ferry links can usually avoid it.
Month-by-month planning
When to visit
Choose a Malta month by heritage weather, swimming conditions, exposed walks, ferry reliability and summer heat.

Avoid the common route problems
Planning checks
Allow for road congestion
Distances are short, but buses and taxis share busy roads. Avoid tight connections between a bus, ferry and timed attraction, and keep the final airport journey separate from a full sightseeing plan. Harbour crossings can provide a more dependable alternative.
Check Comino access before travel
Current visitor controls, landing slots and authorised transport can change. Use the official system for the date, understand that transport is purchased separately, and keep another coast day ready if sea conditions intervene. Confirm both the landing permission and boat booking.
Give Gozo more than a rushed loop
Victoria, Dwejra, villages and coastal walks do not fit comfortably between the first and last ferry of a hurried day. Stay two or three nights when Gozo is a main part of the trip. This also allows a change of plan in wind.

Quick answers
Planning questions
Where should I stay on a first Malta trip?
Valletta suits history and harbour travel, while Sliema offers more waterfront accommodation and easy connections. Mellieħa is better when northern beaches matter most.
Is Gozo worth an overnight stay?
Yes, especially for two or more days. Staying in Victoria or a coastal village avoids compressing the ferry, buses and island sights into one rushed return trip.
Can I explore Malta without a car?
Yes. Buses and harbour ferries reach the main towns and many beaches, although summer traffic can slow journeys. A car is more useful on Gozo than in Valletta.
What should I check before visiting Comino?
Confirm the current access rules, your booked departure point and the sea forecast. Comino has limited services, and poor conditions can change or cancel sailings.
