Malta destination guide

Rabat, Malta

Rabat is Mdina’s lived-in neighbour, with extensive underground archaeology, parish streets and several heritage sites outside the fortified city.

The Basilica of St Paul in Rabat, Malta

Rabat deserves more than the walk back to the bus after Mdina. Its catacombs and Roman remains explain the settlement beyond the old city walls, while the active centre provides a clear contrast with Mdina’s enclosed lanes.

Allow time below ground

St Paul’s Catacombs form a large interconnected burial complex rather than a single chamber. Uneven floors, low passages and the amount of interpretation make a hurried visit unsatisfying. Check the official accessibility and opening information if mobility or a fixed schedule affects the day.

Choose additional sites with care

Rabat also includes the Domvs Romana, St Paul’s Grotto area and smaller underground sites. They do not all share one ticket or identical hours. Select the place that best supports your interest instead of building a day around assumptions copied from an old itinerary.

Notice the town between the monuments

The parish square, bakeries and residential streets give Rabat its own identity. A meal or short walk here breaks up the heavier museum visits and shows why the settlement continued beyond Mdina’s walls. Keep entrances and church services clear when the centre is busy.

Join Rabat and Mdina on foot

The two centres are natural partners and require no transport between them. Start with the site that has the strictest admission time, then cross to the other area at a relaxed pace. This approach works better than assigning each place a separate half-day transfer.
