About Cyprus
Why visit Cyprus
Cyprus combines archaeological sites and lively coastal cities with the forested Troodos Mountains, wine villages and walking routes. Nicosia offers a very different experience from the beach resorts, with museums and neighbourhoods on both sides of the old city walls.
The island looks compact, but the best base depends on the trip. Paphos suits western archaeology and the Akamas area, Larnaca and Limassol work for the south coast, and the Troodos villages are easier with a car or driver.
Plan Cyprus by region
This guide covers the Republic of Cyprus and its government-controlled tourism scope. Nicosia, Paphos, Larnaca and Limassol provide distinct city and coast bases, while Troodos villages and the Akamas area require different access plans.
Public transport works between major centres, but rural, mountain and peninsula journeys are much easier by car or booked driver. The island’s division, crossing arrangements and rental insurance need current official checks rather than casual assumptions.

Choose a region
Larnaca Region
A coastal region combining Larnaca, salt-lake landscapes and inland craft villages. Use intercity and local buses for Larnaca, with a car or driver helpful for villages.
View regionLimassol Region
A broad region of urban coast, archaeological sites and road-linked wine villages. Intercity and local buses suit the city. A car helps for villages and dispersed archaeological sites.
View regionTroodos Mountains
Forests, painted churches and dispersed mountain villages requiring a road-led plan. Use a car or driver. Public services do not form a simple all-day mountain circuit.
View regionPaphos Region
An archaeology-rich coast extending north through Polis and Latchi to Akamas. Intercity and local buses serve principal centres. A car helps selectively but is not a licence to cross closed Akamas roads.
View regionAmmochostos Region
The government-controlled southeast around Ayia Napa, Protaras and Cape Greco. OSEA buses link the principal resort corridor. A car is optional rather than necessary.

Plan a day out
Day trips and experiences
Lefkara from Larnaca
A measured Lefkara day from Larnaca, using a car or driver unless a current rural bus provides a workable return.
Omodos from Limassol
A full village day from Limassol covering Omodos square, historic lanes and one verified producer without a rushed mountain loop.
Akamas Peninsula from Paphos
A long Paphos day using buses to Polis and the Baths of Aphrodite area before one route chosen for weather and ability.
Cape Greco from Ayia Napa
A bus-and-walking day from Ayia Napa using one named Cape Greco stop and a short route that respects heat and daylight.
Troodos Mountains from Nicosia
A full mountain day from Nicosia built around one village, one confirmed church and an optional short walk.
Match the route to your time
Choose a trip length
One coast and an inland day
Choose Paphos, Larnaca or Limassol as the main base, then add Nicosia or one carefully arranged village day. A short stay cannot cover both ends of the island and Troodos without becoming a sequence of road transfers.
Two bases with Troodos
Combine a western or eastern coast base with Nicosia or Limassol, then reserve one day for Troodos. A rental car or driver makes the village route dependable, while buses require a much narrower plan. Keep one coast day flexible.
Coast, cities and villages
Use two or three bases to cover Paphos, Nicosia, the south coast and a focused mountain section. Keep Akamas or Cape Greco as a separate outdoor choice and plan around heat, road conditions and the final local connection.

Transport choices
Getting around Cyprus
Intercity buses connect Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos and several coastal centres, with separate urban operators handling local routes. Service to Troodos villages, the Akamas Peninsula and remote beaches is limited, so a car or booked driver often provides the practical link. Cyprus drives on the left. Check current crossing and rental-insurance conditions before changing jurisdictions. Rural Sunday service can be especially limited.
Intercity buses
Use the current Intercity Buses timetable for travel between the main cities. Check the exact urban endpoint because the intercity stop may require another local bus or taxi to reach the old town or accommodation.
Local buses
Separate operators serve each urban and coastal area. Routes work for selected beaches and sights, but evening frequency and seasonal changes can affect the return. Plan both directions before leaving the main corridor.
Driving
A car is valuable for Troodos villages, Akamas gateways and dispersed coastal stops. Drive on the left, allow time for narrow mountain roads, and confirm that rental insurance remains valid for every area included in the route.
Booked outings
A driver or small-group outing can solve a mountain or peninsula day without keeping a car for the entire holiday. Confirm the actual stops and walking involved rather than relying on a broad regional label.
Month-by-month planning
When to visit
Choose a Cyprus month by coast, inland heat, Troodos conditions and the transport needed for the actual route.

Avoid the common route problems
Planning checks
Check current crossing guidance
Rules, opening arrangements and insurance implications can change. Use current government and official visitor guidance before planning any crossing, and do not assume that a rental agreement or mobile service works identically on both sides.
Plan around heat and wildfire risk
Summer heat can make archaeological sites, exposed coast walks and mountain drives harder than expected. Start outdoor visits early, carry water, check official warnings and keep an alternative when a trail or road is restricted.
Do not overfill a village route
Troodos villages appear close on a map, but narrow roads, parking and worthwhile stops slow the day. Choose a coherent circuit with two or three priorities rather than trying to collect every named village. Leave time for lunch and unplanned viewpoints.

Quick answers
Planning questions
Which part of Cyprus is best for a first stay?
Paphos is strong for archaeology and the west, while Larnaca is convenient for a shorter car-free stay. Add Nicosia or a Troodos village when culture and inland scenery matter as much as the coast.
Do I need a car in Cyprus?
Not for a stay centred on one city and the main intercity bus corridor. A car or driver is much more useful for Troodos villages, rural wineries, Akamas and beaches away from frequent bus routes.
Can I combine the coast and Troodos in one week?
Yes, if you use no more than two bases. Spend most nights on the coast and reserve two nights inland, or take one carefully planned mountain day from Limassol.
What should I know about crossing the island?
Use designated crossing points and check current official guidance on documents, insurance and rental-car conditions. Rules can change, so this is a detail to confirm close to travel.
