About Paphos Region
Why explore Paphos Region
Few Cyprus regions combine archaeology and coast so closely. Paphos holds mosaics, tombs and harbour monuments, while the northwest provides quieter settlements and access to a protected peninsula.
The region becomes easier when split into two bases. Paphos suits the UNESCO sites and southwest coast. Polis or Latchi shortens journeys to Akamas and creates a calmer harbour stay.
Plan the region
Give Paphos at least two full days because the lower harbour area, archaeological sites and upper town are separate clusters. Add the northwest only when the itinerary has time for another base.
Akamas is not an ordinary scenic drive. Roads, trails and fire restrictions can change, and rental-car conditions may exclude rough routes. Check official notices and use an open named route.

Places to explore
3 guidesPaphos
Paphos combines a harbour resort, large archaeological sites and an upper town that feels separate from the coast.
Open guidePolis Chrysochous and Latchi
Polis and Latchi form a quieter northwest Cyprus base, pairing a small service town with a harbour and access toward Akamas.
Open guideAkamas Peninsula
Akamas is a protected northwest peninsula of exposed trails and coast where current road, fire and weather conditions determine the visit.

Plan by area
Paphos city and archaeology
Kato Paphos provides the harbour and archaeological park, while the upper town has a different street life and market area. Local buses reduce repeated walks between clusters.
Polis and Latchi
Polis is the small-town service centre and Latchi is the harbour base. They work together for a quieter coast stay and access toward the Baths of Aphrodite.
Akamas Peninsula
Akamas is a conservation and walking destination with exposed terrain. Choose a named trail or a licensed boat plan, then verify conditions before departure.

Paphos lies on the southwest coast. Polis and Latchi form a separate northwest base, while Akamas requires a current access and trail plan.
Match the route to your time
What fits into your trip
Paphos only
Use two days for the archaeological park, Tombs of the Kings, harbour and upper town. Keep the third for a slower coast or museum day. The northwest is too far for a casual addition in summer.
City with one northwest day
Spend three nights in Paphos, then choose a long day toward Polis and Latchi or move there for two nights. If conditions suit, add one short, verified Akamas route without making another unnecessary hotel change.
Two-base regional route
Split the stay between Paphos and Polis or Latchi. This gives the UNESCO sites, harbour towns and one weather-dependent Akamas day enough space without repeating the long regional journey across the island’s broad western district.
Link the stops sensibly
Routes and day trips
Paphos and the northwest are linked by road and bus, but they do not function as one compact resort strip. Move base when Akamas or the quieter coast is central to the trip.
Suggested regional routes
Paphos archaeology and harbour
Separate the archaeological park from the Tombs of the Kings and upper town. Exposed ground and heat make one all-day ruins circuit unnecessarily tiring.
Open destination guidePolis and Latchi
Stay near the preferred evening base, then use local transport or a short taxi journey between town and harbour. Confirm any boat or bus return on the day.
Open destination guideAkamas on an open route
Choose one official trail or a permitted coastal trip. Carry water, avoid closed roads and keep a non-hiking alternative for heat, fire risk or rough sea.

A long Paphos day using buses to Polis and the Baths of Aphrodite area before one route chosen for weather and ability.
Choose transport by destination
Getting around Paphos Region
Local buses cover the main Paphos clusters and regional buses run toward Polis. A car helps with dispersed sites, but it does not override road closures or rental restrictions in Akamas.
Paphos buses
Use local routes between the harbour, upper town and major archaeological stops. Confirm the final return for sites outside the central corridor.
Polis and Latchi
Regional services connect Paphos with Polis, and a local route may continue toward Latchi and the Baths of Aphrodite. Check current times in both directions.
Akamas access
Walk a named open trail, use permitted paved approaches or choose a licensed operator. Do not take an ordinary rental car onto a rough or closed road.
Choose dates that suit the route
When to visit
Spring and autumn suit exposed archaeology and walking. Summer favours early ruins visits and coast time, while winter brings quieter sites and a greater chance of rain.
Wildfire danger, trail work and sea conditions can change Akamas plans. Recheck official notices close to the visit and keep the day flexible.

Planning checks
Split the archaeological sites
Paphos has several large, exposed areas. Treat them as separate visits rather than one continuous walk.
Do not improvise in Akamas
Use a named route and current access information. Saved tracks may cross roads that are closed or unsuitable.
Check the northwest return
Bus and boat schedules change. Confirm the last useful return before committing to an evening away from the chosen base.
Quick answers
Questions about Paphos Region
How many days do I need in Paphos Region?

Should I stay in Paphos or Polis?
Choose Paphos for archaeology and urban services. Add Polis or Latchi when the northwest coast and Akamas are priorities.
Can I drive through Akamas?
Do not assume that you can. Check road closures, rental terms and official access information before using any route.
Can I visit without a car?
Yes for Paphos and selected Polis or Latchi journeys. A car adds flexibility but is not required for every main stop.
