Paphos travel guide

Paphos combines a harbour resort, large archaeological sites and an upper town that feels separate from the coast.

Paphos needs more than a single waterfront walk. The archaeological park, Tombs of the Kings, harbour and upper town form different clusters that are easier to understand over two or three days.

Split the archaeological visits

Paphos Archaeological Park contains mosaics, villas and public remains across an exposed area near the harbour. Give it a cool morning or late-day block rather than fitting it between beach stops.

The Tombs of the Kings lie in a different direction and also involve uneven, open ground. Treat the two sites as separate visits unless the weather is mild and the group is comfortable walking.

Connect harbour and upper town

Kato Paphos has the harbour, castle and resort services. Ktima, the upper town, has civic streets, markets and a less resort-led atmosphere.

Local buses reduce repeated uphill journeys. Choose accommodation according to the preferred evening area rather than expecting every part of Paphos to be walkable from one hotel.

Use the coast without losing the city

The seafront is useful for an evening walk and access to selected beaches, but it does not replace the archaeological and urban sections. Leave time for both.

Boat trips and swimming depend on sea conditions. Confirm the operator and same-day weather instead of treating a booked departure as guaranteed.

Build onward travel sensibly

Paphos is a practical base for the southwest, but Polis, Latchi and Akamas deserve a separate northwest plan. Repeated long day trips reduce useful time.

Paphos has intercity links to the main urban centres. Check the departure point, luggage arrangements and current schedule before relying on one for an onward journey.

Questions about Paphos

How long should I stay in Paphos?

Three days covers the main archaeological sites, harbour and upper town. Four days gives a slower coast day.

Is Paphos walkable?

Each main cluster is walkable, but buses help between the harbour, upper town and distant sites.

Can I visit both major archaeological sites in one day?

It is possible in mild weather, but separate visits are more comfortable and useful.

Do I need a car?

No for the city. A car helps with dispersed regional stops but is not required for the core visit.
