About Lithuania
Why visit Lithuania
Vilnius and Kaunas provide contrasting city bases, one shaped by a baroque old town and the other by interwar modernism. Trakai adds an easy lake-and-castle outing, while Klaipėda is the gateway to the Curonian Spit.
Lithuania’s cities connect well by rail, but the coast and national parks need a slower approach. Nida, Aukštaitija and Dzūkija are most rewarding when they receive their own base rather than a long return journey from the capital.
Plan Lithuania by region
Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda create a clear city corridor, with Trakai as the simplest historic extension. The Curonian Spit, national parks and smaller spa towns need separate ferry, bus or driving plans.
Rail handles the main cities and selected international routes, while buses complete much of the country. Choose the Baltic coast or an inland park section according to the season instead of trying to fit both into a short city trip.

Plan a day out
Day trips and experiences
Trakai day trip from Vilnius
A simple rail day when the walk from Trakai station, castle entry and lakeside time are all included in the schedule.
Kaunas day trip from Vilnius
A direct rail day focused on Kaunas modernism, the central avenues and one well-chosen museum.
Nida day trip from Klaipėda
A long ferry-and-bus day that works only when both directions and enough time in Nida are confirmed first.
Hill of Crosses from Šiauliai
A focused half-day planned around the journey beyond Šiauliai and a reliable return from the rural site.
Match the route to your time
Choose a trip length
Vilnius, Trakai and Kaunas
Give Vilnius three days, add Trakai with a current rail or bus plan, then spend one or two nights in Kaunas. Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit deserve a longer route rather than a rushed final day.
The three-city corridor
Link Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda by rail or bus, keeping at least two nights in each main base. Add the Curonian Spit only when the ferry and onward bus leave enough useful time. Avoid a same-day coast return.
Cities with coast or national park
Follow the city corridor, then add Nida and the Curonian Spit or an inland park such as Aukštaitija. A car helps with dispersed nature stops, while public transport requires one focused gateway. Allow three nights for that section.

Suggested itineraries
Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda in 8 days
Eight days follow Lithuania’s main rail axis from Vilnius through Kaunas to Klaipėda, with enough time for each city to work as an overnight base.
- Main stops
- Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda
- Transport
- Train, Bus, Ferry, Walking
- Best suited to
- First-time visitors interested in architecture, history and a Baltic-coast finish without a car.
- Main trade-off
- Only two Klaipėda nights leave one full day for either the city or a short Spit outing, not both in depth.
Lithuanian Curonian Spit in 5 days
Five days use Klaipėda as the ferry gateway before a three-night Nida stay, allowing the Lithuanian Curonian Spit to be explored at a sensible pace.
- Main stops
- Klaipėda, Nida
- Transport
- Ferry, Bus, Bicycle, Walking
- Best suited to
- Walkers and cyclists who want dunes, lagoon villages and time without a car.
- Main trade-off
- Every Spit journey depends on the ferry and onward bus, while wind and conservation rules constrain dune access.
Aukštaitija lakes and towns in 6 days
Six days pair Anykščiai with a single base near Aukštaitija National Park, giving the lakes and forests time without repeated hotel changes.
- Main stops
- Anykščiai, Aukštaitija National Park
- Transport
- Car, Bicycle, Boat, Walking
- Best suited to
- Nature-focused travellers who can drive and want forest attractions plus a lake base.
- Main trade-off
- There is no dependable through public link from Anykščiai to a useful park circuit.
Druskininkai and southern Lithuania in 5 days
Five days divide the trip between Druskininkai and one rural base near Dzūkija National Park, combining spa-town services with southern forest landscapes.
- Main stops
- Druskininkai, Dzūkija National Park
- Transport
- Car, Train, Bus, Walking
- Best suited to
- Travellers who want spa time followed by pine forests and living village landscapes.
- Main trade-off
- The park is dispersed and public transport does not support a flexible two-day nature circuit.
Transport choices
Getting around Lithuania
LTG Link trains connect Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and selected smaller towns, with current timetable changes published separately. Intercity buses expand the network. A ferry links Klaipėda with the Curonian Spit, followed by road or bus travel to Nida. A car helps in national parks and rural Samogitia but is unnecessary in the main city centres. The coast needs a ferry or onward bus plan.
Rail
Use LTG Link for the main city corridor and check the dated trip search because engineering work can alter annual timetables. Reserve international services where the operator requires a specific seat.
Intercity buses
Buses connect cities and towns not served directly by rail. Compare the terminal location and complete journey, then confirm the return before committing to a remote day trip.
Ferry and coast links
Reaching Nida requires the Klaipėda ferry and onward travel along the Curonian Spit. Treat the transfer as a chain and check the last practical bus before choosing accommodation.
Driving
A car helps in Aukštaitija, Dzūkija and dispersed coastal areas. It adds little in Vilnius or Kaunas. Check ferry vehicle arrangements, park access and accommodation parking before the rural section.

Avoid the common route problems
Planning checks
Check current rail changes
Annual timetable documents may not show temporary engineering changes. Use the operator’s dated search and notices for the actual journey, especially before an international connection or the final bus to a rural stay. Allow time for a replacement bus.
Protect the Curonian Spit transfer
Klaipėda is only the gateway. Plan the ferry, onward bus or car journey and final accommodation arrival together. A late city arrival may leave too little time to continue comfortably to Nida. Check the final local departure before booking.
Choose one nature region
Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, Samogitia and the Curonian Spit serve different routes. Pick one around the season and available transport rather than scattering single outdoor days across opposite sides of the country. Stay nearby for at least two nights.

A useful destination comparison
Nida or Palanga for Lithuania’s coast?
Choose Nida for dunes, cycling and a quieter nature-led stay on the Curonian Spit. Choose Palanga for direct access, a livelier resort and a simpler short beach break.
Quick answers
Planning questions
Can Vilnius and Kaunas fit into one trip?
Yes. The cities are linked by frequent trains and each deserves at least two nights. Add Trakai from Vilnius rather than treating it as another hotel stop.
How should I visit the Curonian Spit?
Use Klaipėda as the mainland gateway and stay at least two nights in Nida or another spit settlement. A day return is possible, but it leaves little time beyond the main dunes.
Is Lithuania practical without a car?
The main cities and Klaipėda are straightforward by train or coach. A car gives more freedom in national parks and rural regions, where onward buses can be limited.
Which season suits a mixed city and nature trip?
Late spring to early autumn offers the broadest access to the coast, lakes and walking routes. Winter is better suited to city museums and a simpler rail itinerary.
