Kaunas city guide

Kaunas combines an Old Town, interwar modernist architecture, strong museums and a useful central base for a slower Lithuania route.

Kaunas deserves its own stay between Vilnius and the coast. The medieval core, long Laisvės Alėja and interwar modernist districts form distinct walks, while the city’s museums add context that a brief station stop cannot provide.

Separate the Old Town from the modern city

Kaunas Castle, Town Hall Square and the confluence belong to the older city. Laisvės Alėja leads east toward the interwar centre. Treating them as two walks creates time for interiors and avoids a hurried end-to-end march.

Read the modernist landscape

Kaunas expanded rapidly while serving as Lithuania’s temporary capital between the world wars. The UNESCO inscription covers a broad urban landscape rather than one monument, so use an architecture route or museum interpretation to make sense of the buildings.

Choose museums with a purpose

The M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum, Ninth Fort and other collections address very different subjects. Pick one or two that match the trip. Ninth Fort sits outside the centre and needs a separate transport and emotional time allowance.

Continue through central Lithuania

Frequent intercity links make Kaunas a logical stop between Vilnius and Klaipėda. The Lithuanian Ethnographic Museum near Rumšiškės is a separate outing. Confirm seasonal opening and transport before committing a day to its extensive outdoor grounds.
