Vilnius rewards more than a quick Old Town circuit. Its churches and courtyards sit beside places that trace Jewish life, occupation and independence, while Užupis and the newer districts show a capital still changing beyond the historic centre.
Walk the Old Town in sections
Begin around Cathedral Square and the university quarter, then follow Pilies Street toward Town Hall Square and the Gates of Dawn. Dividing the route leaves time for courtyards and interiors instead of turning the UNESCO-listed centre into one long walk past facades.
Make room for difficult history
The city’s Jewish heritage and twentieth-century occupations need careful interpretation. Choose a museum or guided route with a clear focus, then allow a quieter block around the former Jewish quarter or Paneriai rather than collecting disconnected memorials.
Cross the river or visit Užupis
Užupis is close to the Old Town but works best as a neighbourhood walk, not a novelty stop. The National Gallery and modern business district north of the Neris offer another view of the city when a longer stay supports it.
Use Vilnius as a transport base
Trakai is the simplest independent day trip. Kernavė needs more timetable care, while Kaunas is better treated as the next base. Check LTG Link and current local transport information because schedules and airport links can change.

Questions about Vilnius
How many days are enough for Vilnius?
Two full days cover the main centre. Add a third for museums or a fourth for a day trip.
Is Vilnius Old Town walkable?
Yes, although cobbles, slopes and long museum days still require sensible pacing.
Should I visit Trakai from Vilnius?
Yes if the trip includes at least three nights. It is an easy contrast to the capital.
