Klaipėda city guide

Klaipėda is Lithuania’s port city and the practical gateway to the Curonian Spit, with a compact old centre and maritime museums.

Klaipėda works both as a city stop and as the coast’s transport hinge. Its German and Prussian urban history differs from inland Lithuania, while the ferry to Smiltynė opens access to beaches, the Sea Museum and buses farther down the Curonian Spit.

Read the port city on foot

Theatre Square, fachwerk buildings and riverfront form a compact first walk. The old centre is smaller than Vilnius or Kaunas, so include the port context and surviving German-influenced streets rather than expecting another large medieval core.

Choose the right ferry terminal

Klaipėda has separate ferry arrangements for pedestrians and vehicles. Confirm the current terminal, crossing and onward plan with Smiltynės Perkėla. A simple crossing to Smiltynė is different from committing to a bus journey down the peninsula.

Give the maritime sites enough time

The Lithuanian Sea Museum and nearby attractions lie across the lagoon at the northern end of the spit. They can fill much of a day when ferry travel and the walk from the landing are included. Check official hours before leaving the city.

Use Klaipėda as a coast base

Palanga is north by regional bus. Juodkrantė and Nida require the ferry plus onward transport. One or two nights work for the city and Smiltynė, but add time or change base if the southern spit is central to the trip.
