Trakai is one of the easiest independent trips from Vilnius, but the station is not beside the island castle. Build the walk through town into the day and leave enough time for the lakeshore beyond the main sight.
Allow for the station walk
The route from the railway station to the castle area takes time and passes through the town. Comfortable shoes matter, especially when paths are wet or icy. A local bus or taxi can shorten the transfer for travellers with limited mobility.
Visit more than the castle exterior
Check island castle opening and ticket arrangements before choosing the train. Add a lakeside walk and time to understand Trakai’s Karaim heritage rather than returning immediately after a photograph of the footbridge.
Avoid the tight return
Keep at least one later train as a backup and do not combine Trakai with an evening flight. In summer, boats and busy paths can extend the visit. In winter, short daylight and slippery surfaces favour an earlier departure from Vilnius.
