About Ammochostos Region
Why explore Ammochostos Region
Southeast Cyprus has the island’s clearest resort corridor, but its three principal destinations have different roles. Ayia Napa mixes town life and nightlife, Protaras is a bay-based accommodation area, and Cape Greco is an outdoor day.
Local buses make a car optional for the main coast. The important choices are the right base, a beach suited to the day and enough flexibility for strong sun, wind or trail conditions.
Plan the region
Choose Ayia Napa for a livelier town and broader evening scene. Choose Protaras for a resort stay organised around bays. Either can reach Cape Greco when the current bus or walking plan is checked.
This guide uses the Republic of Cyprus tourism scope for the government-controlled southeast. It does not present Famagusta city or Varosha as ordinary extensions of the resort strip.

Plan by area
Ayia Napa
The monastery area, harbour, beaches and nightlife zones are spread across the resort. Choose accommodation by the desired evening atmosphere and nearest useful bus route.
Protaras
Protaras follows a long coast of bays and accommodation clusters. A seafront address can still be far from another named beach, so check the exact position.
Cape Greco
The national forest park is an exposed landscape of trails and viewpoints. Plan a named route and carry water rather than wandering between roadside stops.

Ayia Napa and Protaras anchor opposite sides of Cape Greco. The map covers the government-controlled resort coast, not Famagusta city or Varosha.
Match the route to your time
What fits into your trip
Choose one resort base
Stay in Ayia Napa or Protaras and use one day for Cape Greco if conditions suit. Spend the other days close to the chosen base, since moving hotels between neighbouring resorts adds little value to a short coast break.
Coast with one nature day
Use one base for the whole stay, alternate busy and quiet beach days, and reserve a morning for Cape Greco. Keep the outdoor day flexible around heat and wind when the coast is at its busiest.
A slower southeast stay
A week allows several bays, town time and a proper Cape Greco visit without changing base. Leave one day open for sea conditions, a rest day or a longer local bus journey during peak season.
Link the stops sensibly
Routes and day trips
The coast road and bus corridor connect the two resorts, with Cape Greco between them. The region is easier as a single-base stay than a sequence of short moves.
Suggested regional routes
Ayia Napa beyond nightlife
Visit the monastery area and harbour before choosing one beach. If nightlife matters, book near it. Otherwise stay away from the busiest streets and use a bus or taxi when needed.
Open destination guideProtaras bays
Use the first day near the chosen accommodation, then take the local bus or coast route to another bay. Check distance and shade rather than assuming the resort is compact.
Open destination guideCape Greco
Select one official trail or viewpoint cluster, start early and carry water. Sea caves and cliff edges require caution, especially in wind or rough water.

Choose transport by destination
Getting around Ammochostos Region
OSEA buses connect the resort corridor and main coastal stops. Walking works within local clusters, while a car is useful only for greater flexibility beyond the regular route.
Coast buses
Routes 101 and 102 serve the main Ayia Napa, Cape Greco and Protaras corridor. Check the current timetable and stop sequence before travelling.
Walking
Promenades and local paths vary in shade and surface. Use a map for the actual accommodation area and avoid exposed midday walks in summer.
Driving
A car can reach quieter stops, but parking and road access change near popular beaches. It is not required for the core resort corridor.
Choose dates that suit the route
When to visit
Late spring and early autumn combine warm coast conditions with less extreme heat. July and August bring the strongest demand and require earlier outdoor activity.
Many resort services are seasonal. Check current opening dates and bus frequency outside the main summer period rather than assuming the full resort is operating.

Planning checks
Choose the base before the beach list
Accommodation location affects every day. Pick the evening atmosphere and transport corridor first, then add nearby bays.
Keep Cape Greco conditional
Heat, wind, trail work or fire controls can change the plan. Recheck conditions and use a shorter route when needed.
Use precise regional language
The guide covers the government-controlled southeast. Do not treat nearby areas outside Republic control as ordinary local day trips.
