Victoria and the Cittadella

Victoria, also called Rabat, is Gozo’s central town and transport hub, crowned by the Cittadella above its markets and busy local streets.

Stone lanes inside Victoria’s Citadel on Gozo

Victoria is more than the interchange between Gozo buses. The Cittadella, old streets around St George’s Basilica and working town centre together make the island’s most useful cultural base.

Begin above the town at the Cittadella

The fortified hill contains lanes, walls, museums and broad island views. A complete visit is more than a circuit of the ramparts. Choose one museum or historic interior if current hours suit, then leave time to understand the relationship between the citadel and the town below.

Walk the centre beyond the bus station

Independence Square and the lanes around St George’s Basilica form the social heart of Victoria. Markets, shops and church activity can change the pace of the streets. Treat the centre as a lived-in place, particularly during services and local events.

Use Victoria to organise Gozo

Most bus routes converge here, which makes the town a practical base for separate days toward Dwejra, Xlendi, Marsalforn or Ġgantija. Connections may not line up perfectly. Check the current journey planner and avoid scheduling two opposite coasts on the same short day.

Stay overnight for a different atmosphere

Day visitors often leave the centre by late afternoon. An overnight stay provides quieter Cittadella views and an easier start for the next island route. Coastal bases offer the sea, but Victoria usually provides the strongest choice when buses and inland heritage lead the plan.
