Ġgantija Temples

Ġgantija is a major prehistoric temple complex near Xagħra on Gozo, with monumental stone structures and an interpretation centre.

Start planning
The megalithic walls and entrance at Ġgantija on Gozo

Ġgantija gives Gozo a heritage site of international importance that should not be squeezed between unrelated coast stops. The museum approach and open-air remains work together, and the scale of the stone walls becomes clear only inside the complex.

Begin with the interpretation

The visitor displays introduce the temple builders, finds and archaeological context before the route reaches the structures. This order helps the irregular rooms and massive walls make sense. Do not reduce the visit to a brief walk around the largest stones.

Allow for open-air conditions

The temple area is exposed, with uneven surfaces and limited shade. Water, sun protection and stable footwear matter through much of the year. Follow the marked route and any conservation barriers rather than seeking a closer photograph.

Check official access on the day

Heritage Malta manages the site, and current opening or conservation information should come from its official pages. Avoid building the guide around a fixed admission price or seasonal hour that may change before the reader travels.

Keep the rest of the day local

Xagħra and Victoria provide the most coherent nearby extensions. A route to Dwejra or the opposite coast adds transport and weakens the heritage focus. Use one part of Gozo well rather than attempting every headline place after the temples.
