Ways to adjust the route

Add one Lisbon night for Sintra.

This northbound route connects Portugal’s two largest cities with a focused Coimbra stop and a proper Douro Valley stay. Nine hotel nights leave three nights each in Lisbon and Porto, one in Coimbra and two beside the Douro.

Check these connections before booking the ten-day route

Book this as a sequence of overnight bases: Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and the Douro Valley. At Coimbra, allow for the connection between the mainline station and the historic centre before choosing a university visit. In Porto, choose the valley base and its station access before booking an activity away from the railway.

CP has announced replacement buses between Marco de Canaveses and Régua from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027. For those dates, check the complete journey and any access limitations in the operator notice. If that connection does not suit your trip, keep the final nights in Porto and take a northern city outing instead. Protect the onward departure day from an ambitious last-minute valley excursion.

Before you confirm the route

  1. Write down the arrival station and local transfer for every overnight base.
  2. Keep the university admission separate from the train arrival in Coimbra.
  3. Check the complete Douro journey, including any replacement bus.
  4. Confirm how the final valley accommodation connects to the departure station.
  5. Leave a margin before the onward flight or long-distance train.

Travel north without retracing the route

Begin in Lisbon and depart from Porto or reverse the full journey when flights make that easier. Returning to the first city adds a long transfer and weakens the final Douro days.

Long-distance trains connect the three urban bases. The valley stage needs its own dated check because the useful station depends on the chosen accommodation and river section.

Give Lisbon three distinct days

Use arrival time around Baixa, Chiado or the river rather than crossing several hills. Keep Belém together on a separate day, then choose Alfama, a museum or another connected neighbourhood for the final Lisbon day.

Sintra does not fit inside this version without replacing a Lisbon day. Travellers who want the palaces should use the seven-day route or add one night before moving north.

Make Coimbra a focused overnight stop

One night allows an afternoon and morning around the university and upper historic centre. Confirm the University of Coimbra visit before assigning the rest of the walk.

Coimbra-B is the long-distance rail station, while many central journeys require a local connection or road transfer. Build that movement into both arrival and departure.

Keep Porto and the Douro separate

Porto receives three nights for the riverside, the upper centre and a flexible final city day. Do not treat every viewpoint, cellar visit and church as part of one steep walking circuit.

Two Douro nights protect a full day after arrival. Choose one valley base and one river or vineyard area instead of spending the day moving between distant stops.

Book the parts that control each day

Check long-distance trains on the operator timetable and reserve services where the selected fare or train requires it. Confirm university access and any named Douro activity through its current official channel.

Portugal’s historic centres contain hills, cobbles and stairs. Check station assistance, accommodation entrances and the exact valley transfer when mobility or luggage affects the plan.

Ten-day route through Portugal

Day 1: Arrive in Lisbon and stay near the accommodation or riverfront.
