Ways to adjust the route

Keep Salzburg as the base and visit one Salzkammergut town for the day. This removes a hotel move but creates a longer return journey.

Remove the Salzkammergut overnight and travel directly from Salzburg to Innsbruck. The two city bases remain connected by frequent westbound trains.

Add one night in Innsbruck. The extra day becomes a weather reserve for Nordkette or a valley excursion without changing hotels again.

This ten-day route joins Austria’s strongest first-trip cities with two nights in one Salzkammergut town. It works without a car, but the lake section needs a named base before trains, buses and accommodation are booked.

Four bases from Vienna to Innsbruck

Spend three nights in Vienna. That leaves two full days for the historic centre, one palace and a museum or neighbourhood day without crossing the city repeatedly.

Two nights in Salzburg cover the old town, Hohensalzburg Fortress and one music or riverside route. Save the lake region for the next stop instead of squeezing it into a Salzburg afternoon.

Choose a real Salzkammergut base for two nights. Bad Ischl is the safest public-transport choice, while St Wolfgang suits travellers who accept a bus connection and want to stay beside Wolfgangsee.

Finish with two nights and a departure day in Innsbruck. Keep one full day flexible so Nordkette can move around cloud, wind or poor visibility.

Rail and bus connections

Vienna and Salzburg are linked by frequent westbound trains. The quickest journeys take a little under two and a half hours, although engineering work and the chosen operator can change the exact time and station pattern.

Salzburg to Bad Ischl or Wolfgangsee uses regional rail or bus. A route through the lake district should be checked as one complete connection, including the final stop in the chosen town.

The Salzkammergut to Innsbruck is the longest transfer. Expect changes and keep the arrival afternoon in Innsbruck light. Travelling back through Salzburg is a useful fallback when a regional connection fails.

When this route works best

May, June and September suit a trip that combines cities, lakes and lower mountain walks. High routes and lifts still need a same-day conditions check.

A December version works for Vienna and Salzburg, but it is a different journey. Replace lake walks with winter town visits, check reduced regional services and allow more daylight margin.

Simpler alternatives

For fewer hotel changes, keep Salzburg as a base and visit one Salzkammergut town for the day. The trade-off is a longer return journey and less flexibility around weather.

For an entirely rail-led trip, travel directly from Salzburg to Innsbruck and add the saved night to either city. This is the more dependable choice outside the main lake season.
