Set the return journey before adding Bom Jesus
Check the Porto to Braga journey and a suitable return, then decide whether the day includes the centre alone or the centre plus Bom Jesus. The sanctuary needs a separate local journey. Leave that connection and the time back to Braga station in the plan before filling the afternoon.
If you lose time at the start, keep the cathedral area and central streets as the main visit. Remove an optional extra stop rather than risking the return train. Guimarães is a separate alternative for another day, especially if you prefer a historic-centre walk to the sanctuary outing.

Split Braga into centre and sanctuary
Begin with the cathedral area and nearby streets, then travel to Bom Jesus after lunch or reverse the order when weather and opening information favour the hill. Avoid crossing between them more than once.
Braga has enough churches and museums to fill a day without Bom Jesus. Choose the sanctuary because it matters to the trip, not because every headline stop must be included.
Select a dated train from Porto
Porto urban trains and some longer-distance services reach Braga. Check the actual departure station, stopping pattern and return rather than relying on a general frequency.
Allow time between Braga station and the historic centre. Keep one later useful service in reserve so the final sanctuary connection does not force a rushed departure.
Choose how to reach Bom Jesus
Bom Jesus stands outside the central walking area. Use the current city bus or another confirmed road connection, then choose between the historic water-powered funicular and the long staircase.
The monumental stairway has more than 500 steps. The funicular reduces that effort, but current operation and access still need checking before travel.
Use the old centre as the flexible half
Braga Cathedral, the surrounding squares and the gardens near the centre form a coherent route. Select one interior after checking its current visiting hours.
Rain can shift more time into the central churches and museums. Hot weather makes the stairway less attractive, so place the sanctuary earlier or use the funicular when it is operating.
Return to Porto with station time protected
Leave Bom Jesus early enough for the local ride back into Braga and the journey to the station. Do not count the sanctuary as though it were beside the rail platforms.
With a shorter visit, keep the historic centre and cathedral area. Stay overnight for a slower religious heritage route or a separate excursion to Guimarães.
