Malta destination guide

Mellieħa

Mellieħa spreads from a steep hill town toward Għadira Bay and Malta’s northern ferry approaches, making location important when choosing a base.

Start planning
The rugged Ras il-Griebeg coast near Mellieħa

Mellieħa is not one compact resort. The upper town, Mellieħa Bay and the road toward Ċirkewwa cover a long north-island area, and moving between them can take more time than the shared name suggests.

Check the exact location before booking

Upper Mellieħa has views, local streets and the parish church area, while accommodation near Għadira Bay suits beach time. Walking between the two involves a long slope. A listing that uses the town name may not be close to the water or the preferred bus stop.

Use the north for a focused coast stay

Għadira Bay is one of Malta’s largest sandy beaches and can become busy in warm months. Conditions, shade and crowd levels change through the day. Keep other northern coast choices in reserve rather than assuming every beach day will suit swimming.

Separate Mellieħa from the Gozo transfer

The district is useful for reaching the Gozo ferry, but the terminal is farther north and still requires transport. Build the crossing around the current operator schedule and onward route on Gozo. Do not treat the transfer as a casual extension after a full beach day.

Balance the base against Valletta journeys

Mellieħa works well when northern beaches matter most. It is less convenient for repeated days in Valletta, the Three Cities or the south. A mixed trip can divide time between a harbour base and the north instead of spending every day on the same congested road.
