Multi-city trip planning

Choose each stop in order

Add cities, choose how you may travel between them and set the number of nights. The planner checks dates, stay length, distance and available cost data.

Add at least two places to begin.

Your route

Map lines are a planning preview and do not represent live transport routes or timetables.

    Order of stops

Order the stops before you book

The planner keeps the stops in the order you enter them, so build the list the way you expect to travel and check the shape of the trip before you add dates.

    • Start with the place you arrive in and finish with the place you leave from. A long transfer is easier in the middle of a trip than on the first or last day.
    • Keep the route moving in one direction where you can. A plan that doubles back usually loses a day to travel.
    • Put the places you care about most where you have the most nights, and let smaller stops sit between them.

    Nights and travel days

    Match travel days to nights

A travel day is not usually a sightseeing day. Once a train, coach or ferry, plus the time at each end, takes a few hours, the arrival day is only a partial day in the destination.

    • Two nights at a stop give one full day there. Three nights give two full days.
    • Use a one-night stop for a deliberate break in a long transfer, not for a city you want to explore.
    • Add a night wherever the plan puts two long transfers back to back.
    • Check the stay-length note in the planner against your own list before you book rooms, because the note only reflects the stored planning profile.

    Transport and distance

What the distance warnings can and cannot tell you

The planner measures the straight line between the coordinates stored for each place. That flags the legs where distance is likely to become a problem, but it is not a timetable and it does not price tickets.

    • A rail, coach, ferry or road route can be much longer than the straight-line figure.
    • Cross-border services are often slower and less frequent than domestic ones.
    • Islands, mountain roads and valley stops need extra margin.
    • Confirm the last connection of the day, any seat reservation, and the exact station or port before booking.

    Cost coverage

How the cost estimate is built

The planner totals a daily range only for stops that have a current reviewed range. A place without one shows planning guidance in place of a number.

    • The range is per person, per day, and assumes two people share a room.
    • It covers accommodation, food, local transport and activities.
    • It is a planning figure, not a live quote or a booked price.
    • Open the destination guide for the assumptions, seasonal notes and what each range leaves out.

    Dates and seasons

Check dates and seasons before you commit

The start date you enter only orders the days. The planner does not check timetables, public holidays or opening hours, so the schedule is a shape for the trip rather than a confirmed plan.

    • Check the month for each country before you settle on fixed dates.
    • Leave margin at the end of the trip for a delayed or missed connection.
    • Confirm seasonal transport, closures and event dates before booking non-refundable rooms.
    Compare months and seasons

    Ways to use it

    Ways to use the planner

The planner can start from a published route, a country, or an empty list, so it is useful at any stage of planning.

    • Open a ready-made itinerary, then replace, remove or extend its stops.
    • Add the places you have already chosen and set a trip length to see how the nights divide.
    • Compare the pace options the planner returns when one version of the trip looks too rushed.
    • Save the route on this device, copy the share link, or print the trip summary to keep with your booking notes.
