Day trip

Mdina and Rabat from Valletta

A full inland day from Valletta pairing Mdina’s walled streets with one carefully chosen Rabat site.

Mdina and Rabat sit beside one another and belong in the same day from Valletta. Use a current bus to the shared corridor, then balance the small walled city with one Rabat interior rather than trying to enter every site.

Take the bus to the Mdina and Rabat corridor

Check the live route from Valletta bus terminal and note the return stop before walking away. Traffic can make the journey longer than the island map suggests.

Walk Mdina before choosing an interior

Begin with the gate, bastions and lanes, then select one museum or cathedral visit after confirming the current hours. The city is compact but busy at peak times.

Use Rabat for one deeper visit

Cross into Rabat for the town and one major site. Catacombs and other underground places involve stairs and uneven surfaces, so check access before buying or booking anything.

Plan around heat and historic surfaces

Cobbles, limited shade and crowded lanes can slow the route. Earlier or later hours work better in midsummer, provided the chosen sites are open.

Return from the correct Rabat stop

Allow time to reach the bus stop and use live information for the return. One overnight is optional for a quiet Mdina evening, not necessary for the principal sights.
