Lake region guide

Choosing where to stay at Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton is too large to treat as one resort. Balatonfured and Tihany suit a north-shore route, Keszthely anchors the western end, and Siofok gives the south shore its strongest rail and visitor base.

About Lake Balaton

Why explore Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton supports several kinds of trip. The north shore has hillier scenery, vineyards and historic towns, while the south shore provides flatter beaches and direct rail access through Siofok.

Keszthely adds a palace and year-round cultural focus at the western end. A coherent lake stay comes from choosing compatible towns, not attempting a complete circuit every day.

Plan the region

Use one base for a short stay and two bases for a longer route. Separate railway lines follow the shores, so changing sides can consume more time than expected.

Boats, beaches and many visitor services are seasonal. Check the current timetable and opening dates before relying on them outside July and August.

Match the route to your time

What fits into your trip

Two days

Choose one shore

Base in Balatonfured or Siofok and keep both days on the same side of the lake. This avoids losing much of a short stay to transfers. You can then fit one boat, beach or town outing around a dependable rail-linked base.

Four days

Add a second base

Pair the north shore with Keszthely or Siofok. One planned transfer leaves room for a peninsula walk, a town visit and time by the water. This pace separates the main transfer from swimming, palace visits or a longer peninsula walk.

One week

Travel around the lake

A week supports two or three bases and a wider mix of towns, vineyards and swimming stops. Check seasonal services before depending on boats. Build the order around accommodation and current transport rather than following the shoreline in a fixed direction.

Link the stops sensibly

Routes and day trips

Keep short stays on one shore. Add a second base only when the transfer supports a different part of the lake experience.

Local travel

Buses, boats and bicycles fill local gaps, but frequency varies by route and season.
