Cape Kolka and Slītere guide

Cape Kolka is a natural gateway to Slītere National Park and the Livonian coast, but the wider area needs more than a quick stop at the cape.

Start planning
Sandy shore and sea at Cape Kolka

This is one of Latvia’s more remote coastal areas. Choose the cape, one official trail and perhaps one Livonian village, then secure the return before travelling beyond Ventspils or Riga.

Begin at Cape Kolka

The cape marks the meeting of the open Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. Currents, wind and shifting sand make it a place for observation rather than casual swimming near the point.

Bird migration can be significant in spring and autumn, but sightings depend on weather and timing. Keep distance from resting birds and follow any temporary protection measures.

Choose one Slītere landscape

Slītere protects old dunes, wet hollows, forests and coastal habitats. The Pēterezers trail, lighthouse area and village landscapes use different access points, so select one rather than driving between every name.

Boardwalks and forest paths can close after storms, fire risk or maintenance. Consult the Nature Conservation Agency and local signs before entering a route.

Respect the Livonian coast

Kolka, Mazirbe and smaller fishing villages hold the living heritage of Latvia’s Livonian community. Museums, cultural buildings and food stops have limited hours and deserve more than a quick roadside photograph.

Beaches and forest edges include private homes and protected land. Park only where permitted, carry waste out and avoid drones or loud activity near wildlife and residents.

Secure transport and supplies

A car is the most flexible option, but fuel and food are not available at every stop. Buses can serve selected villages on certain days, with little room for a missed return.

Mobile coverage, daylight and coast weather should shape the route. Tell the accommodation host or another person about a longer trail, and do not improvise on unsigned forest roads.

Questions about Cape Kolka and Slītere National Park

Can I visit Cape Kolka as a day trip?

Yes by car from a western Latvia base, but the day is long from Riga. Public transport needs a carefully verified return.

Is Cape Kolka safe for swimming?

The meeting waters can produce strong currents. Follow local signs and use designated bathing areas away from unsafe conditions.

How much of Slītere fits in one day?

The cape and one official trail or village make a sensible day. The whole park needs more time.

Where should I stay?

A guesthouse around Kolka or the Livonian coast reduces driving. Ventspils offers the widest choice of city services.
