Majori and Dzintari make the easiest first visit, while Bulduri, Dubulti and Ķemeri have different characters. Match the station to the planned walk so the day is spent by the coast rather than retracing the railway.
Choose one part of the coast
Majori combines Jomas Street, beach access and the greatest concentration of cafés. Dzintari adds the concert hall and forest park, while Dubulti has a quieter seafront and a distinctive modernist station used for exhibitions.
The beach runs for many kilometres, but the city’s points of interest do not form one short promenade. Pick two neighbouring districts for a day trip and save the western end for a separate park visit.
Look beyond the beach
Jūrmala’s wooden houses show the resort’s development through several architectural periods. Jūras iela and streets around Majori offer a useful first route, but many buildings remain private homes and should be viewed respectfully.
The open-air museum, pine woods and Lielupe side reveal the fishing and natural history behind the resort image. They require additional local travel, so combine them by geography rather than by a general list of attractions.
Travel by the correct train
Suburban trains from Riga serve several Jūrmala stations. Buy for the station closest to the chosen district and check the current return, especially after an evening concert or outside the main summer season.
A separate visitor entry charge or transport arrangement may apply under local rules. Consult the city’s current official guidance before driving, and do not assume an old parking or access notice still applies.
Treat the Baltic as seasonal
Summer offers the warmest beach conditions, outdoor dining and the widest range of services. Spring and autumn suit long walks and architecture, while winter brings strong wind, ice and a much quieter resort.
Water quality flags, weather and staffed facilities can change daily. Follow beach signs and local safety advice instead of judging conditions only from the appearance of the sea.

Questions about Jūrmala
Which Jūrmala station should I use?
Majori is the simplest first choice. Use Dzintari for the concert hall and park, or another station when the planned sights are farther west or east.
Is Jūrmala a day trip from Riga?
Yes. A full day covers one or two neighbouring districts, a beach walk and wooden architecture without changing accommodation.
Can I visit outside summer?
Yes for coastal walks, architecture and spa stays. Expect fewer seasonal services and more demanding weather.
Does Ķemeri National Park sit in central Jūrmala?
No. The park and its trailheads are west of the main resort districts and need their own transport plan.
