Riga is the practical answer for a first Latvia trip because it has the country’s broadest sightseeing, dining and transport network. Jūrmala becomes the better base when the coast is the purpose of the stay rather than an afternoon excursion.

Riga supports a fuller programme

The capital combines the historic centre, Art Nouveau streets, markets, museums and evening choice. It also provides the best onward links to the rest of Latvia. Poor weather is easier to manage because the day does not depend on the beach.

Jūrmala changes the pace

A night on the coast gives access to quieter mornings, spa time and long walks without a return train hanging over the day. The resort stretches across several stations, so accommodation should be chosen for a specific neighbourhood rather than the Jūrmala name alone.

Combining them is simple

Most travellers should stay in Riga and take a rail day trip. Split the nights only when two or more coastal days are planned. In colder months, Jūrmala still works for spas and walking, but Riga offers a more dependable evening and indoor programme.
