This is Latvia’s most practical first journey without a car. Riga supplies the museums, architecture and evening choice, while Sigulda and Cēsis provide two different bases for the Gauja valley rather than one rushed day from the capital.
Give Riga the first three nights
Three nights leaves two complete city days after arrival. Use one for the historic centre and Central Market area, then a second for the Art Nouveau district, museums or the Daugava waterfront. This avoids returning to Riga simply to finish missed sights.
Use Sigulda and Cēsis differently
Sigulda works best for valley viewpoints, Turaida and an active day on one side of the Gauja. Cēsis is the better overnight base for its medieval centre and a quieter final section. The train links the three stops, but trailheads beyond the towns still need local planning.
Do not try to walk every valley attraction in one day. Elevation changes and river crossings make places that look close on a map slower to connect.
Shorter and longer versions
With five days, keep Riga and choose either Sigulda or Cēsis. With nine days, add another night in Cēsis for a focused national-park outing, or return to Riga and continue to Jūrmala. Check the dated rail timetable before fixing transfer-day tickets.
