Cēsis is one of the best bases for the eastern side of Gauja National Park, yet the park is much larger than the town. The day should centre on one trail area or a prearranged circuit with a reliable return.
Start with the landscape you want
A riverside or sandstone-cliff walk needs different access from a castle-and-manor route. Select the exact start and finish points before leaving Cēsis. Trail distance alone does not show elevation, surface or the time required to return from a rural endpoint.
Do not depend on passing transport
Local buses serve settlements, not a continuous chain of trailheads. For a remote walk, arrange a taxi, guide or two-point transfer in advance. Carry food and water when the route leaves the town because seasonal cafés cannot be treated as guaranteed services.
Keep Cēsis in the day
Reserve time for the medieval castle area or an evening in the old town. If the park plan consumes every daylight hour, add another night rather than treating Cēsis only as a place to sleep.
