When to go

Latvia’s Baltic coast by season

A seasonal guide to Jūrmala, Liepāja, Ventspils and the remote northern coast around Cape Kolka.

Latvia’s coast changes considerably between the rail-linked resort of Jūrmala, the port cities and the sparsely served north. The right month also depends on whether the aim is swimming, long walks, city culture or an exposed coastal drive.

Jūrmala has the longest practical season

Frequent rail access and urban services make Jūrmala useful outside peak beach weather. Summer brings the busiest sand and events, while spring and autumn suit architecture walks and spa stays. Wind can make a mild forecast feel much colder beside the gulf.

Liepāja and Ventspils work as cities

Both places offer more than a beach, so poor weather does not cancel the visit. Liepāja has the deeper cultural programme, while Ventspils provides a compact waterfront base for the northern section. Seasonal attraction hours still need checking.

Cape Kolka needs daylight and planning

The cape and Slītere coast are most practical with a car and a full day. Services are limited, and public transport should be checked for the exact date. Avoid placing the remote north on a day with a fixed evening connection elsewhere.
