The fortress and Rothko Museum need most of a day, while the centre and Church Hill deserve another. Stay at least one night rather than compressing the long return to Riga around museum hours.
Give the fortress a full visit
Daugavpils Fortress is a large urban and military complex, not a single museum building. Walk its streets, gates and ramparts with care, recognising that homes, institutions and visitor sites share the area.
The Rothko Museum provides the main contemporary-art focus within the fortress. Exhibitions and opening hours change, so check the museum directly and allow more time than a short gallery stop.
See the city beyond the fortress
The central grid, Rīgas iela and Shmakovka Museum show different parts of Daugavpils life and regional history. Church Hill gathers several denominations within a small area and reflects the city’s religious diversity.
These districts are separated from the fortress by enough distance to justify local transport or a planned walk. Avoid repeatedly crossing the city between timed attractions.
Use the railway strategically
Daugavpils has direct rail links with Riga, but the journey is long enough to make an overnight useful. Confirm the current departure and reserve a margin around the final museum entry.
International and border-area services can change at short notice. Use official operator information and current government advice rather than assuming a cross-border route shown on an older map is running.
Add rural Latgale carefully
Aglona and southern lake country can extend the stay, but they need their own bus, driver or car plan. They are not quick additions between the fortress and the evening train.
Winter makes city museums more central, while summer opens longer outdoor days. Road, snow and daylight conditions should decide whether a rural extension remains sensible.

Questions about Daugavpils
How many days do I need in Daugavpils?
Two days gives the fortress, Rothko Museum, centre and Church Hill enough time.
Can I visit from Riga in one day?
It is possible on some timetables, but a long return limits the city. One overnight is more useful.
Is the fortress only a museum?
No. It is a large lived-in complex containing streets, buildings, museums and restored sections.
Can Daugavpils be a base for the lakes?
Yes for southern Latgale, though Rēzekne is often better placed for Rāzna National Park.
