Latgale needs more planning than a Riga-based trip, but it offers Latvia’s clearest change of pace. Daugavpils and Rēzekne anchor the journey, while a lake stay supplies the rural landscape that cannot be understood from either city alone.

Use the cities as real stops

Daugavpils merits time for the fortress, cultural institutions and the city’s distinct regional character. Rēzekne is smaller but places travellers closer to the lake district. One-night stops weaken both cities and leave no margin for limited opening hours.

Name the lake base before booking

Choose accommodation near the activity that matters, such as Rāzna National Park, a walking route or a specific waterside settlement. A generic promise of staying near the lakes can result in long drives and no practical access to the shore.
