About Latgale

Why explore Latgale

Latgale offers a different scale and cultural texture from Riga, with substantial city heritage and a lake landscape that rewards several nights rather than a single long day.

Daugavpils provides fortress and art history, Rēzekne introduces Latgalian culture, and Rāzna gives the most structured first route into the countryside.

Plan the region

Use rail for the long journey east, then select one city and one rural section. A week can link both cities without treating every lake as a roadside stop.

Public transport reaches major towns and some villages, but it does not function as a park shuttle. Rural accommodation, a car or an arranged driver needs to be decided early.

City

Daugavpils

Daugavpils is Latvia’s second-largest city and a strong cultural base for southern Latgale, centred on a vast nineteenth-century fortress complex.

Rēzekne

Rēzekne is a small regional city whose concert hall, museums, churches and castle hill introduce Latgalian identity before a lake-country trip.

Daugavpils

The fortress, Rothko Museum, centre and Church Hill create the strongest two-day city stay in southern Latgale.

Rēzekne

A compact cultural base for GORS, regional history and onward journeys toward Rāzna.

Daugavpils anchors the south, Rēzekne opens the Rāzna area, and the wider lake district requires a named rural base.

What fits into your trip

3 days

One city and one lake day

Choose Daugavpils or Rēzekne for two nights, then reserve one day for a named rural destination. This avoids losing most of the visit to transfers between the two cities and scattered lake shores on minor roads.

5 days

Cities with Rāzna

Give Daugavpils two days, Rēzekne one and Rāzna National Park a full day, leaving one travel margin. Arrange the park connection before booking, since buses do not provide a general touring circuit around the lake.

8 days

A slow eastern route

Use both city bases, stay two nights in the lake country and keep one day flexible. The slower pace supports museums, rural roads and weather changes without requiring a new accommodation stop each evening during the trip.

Link the stops sensibly

Routes and day trips

Travel east by rail, use Daugavpils or Rēzekne as a city base, then enter the lake country only for a planned destination and return.

7 day itinerary

Latgale cities and lakes in 7 days

Seven days combine Daugavpils and Rēzekne with a planned base in the Latgale lake district, where a car or arranged transfer is most useful.

Choose transport by destination

Getting around Latgale

Long-distance rail and buses reach the cities. Rural lake travel usually needs a car, host transfer, driver or one carefully verified bus.

Rail from Riga

Check Vivi for the current Daugavpils or Rēzekne service and the exact arrival station.

Regional buses

Use buses for specific towns or villages, not spontaneous lake hopping. Secure the return first.

Driving

Carry fuel and offline maps, allow for minor roads and use only recognised public shoreline access.

Choose dates that suit the route

When to visit

Summer supports lake stays and long drives. Late spring and early autumn suit walking with fewer seasonal services.

Winter can work for city culture, but snow, ice and short daylight reduce the margin for rural routes.

Avoid common route problems

Planning checks

Do not plan a Riga day trip

The long journey east leaves too little time for the cities or lakes.

Confirm shoreline access

Not every road to a lake leads to a public beach or trail.

Treat border services as volatile

Check official operators and government advice for any international connection.

Which city is the better base?

Daugavpils suits southern Latgale and fortress history. Rēzekne is better placed for Rāzna.

Do I need a car for the lakes?

A car is usually easiest, though a host transfer or one confirmed bus route can work.

Can I cross the region by train?

Some city connections exist, but current timetables must shape the route.
