Bari combines a lived-in old town, Romanesque churches, seafront promenades and a major rail and ferry gateway on the Adriatic.

Walk Bari Vecchia without treating it as a museum

The Basilica of San Nicola, cathedral and Norman-Swabian castle anchor a district that remains residential and active. Follow the main lanes respectfully and leave room for ordinary neighbourhood life around the landmarks.

The newer Murat quarter begins across Corso Vittorio Emanuele and leads towards Bari Centrale. Pairing both sides of the centre shows a broader city than a quick circuit of the old walls.

Use the seafront to connect the city

Bari’s long lungomare links views of the old town with beaches and later neighbourhoods. It is most comfortable outside the hottest part of a summer day and can be windy in unsettled weather.

The working port and passenger terminals are separate from some city attractions. Check the exact terminal and transfer if Bari is the start of a ferry journey rather than assuming the waterfront is one compact stop.

Choose one Puglia rail branch at a time

Polignano a Mare and Monopoli lie along the coastal line, while Alberobello and Matera use different routes and operators. The timetable, station name and final walk matter more than the short distances on a map.

Bari is a useful base, but long returns can make a regional trip repetitive. Move south to Lecce or west to Matera when several days are focused on that area.

Timing and practical limits in Bari

Spring and autumn suit city walks and regional travel. Summer is hot and busy along the coast, while winter brings a quieter city with more changeable weather.

Bari planning questions

How many days should I spend in Bari?

Two full days suit the city. Add nights when Bari is the base for one or two carefully chosen regional trips.

Can I explore Bari without a car?

Yes. The centre is walkable and rail reaches many Puglia towns, although routes may use different operators.

Is Bari or Lecce the better Puglia base?

Bari suits northern and central Puglia connections. Lecce is better for Salento and the southern part of the region.
