Paris, Lyon, an Avignon-area Provence base and Nice form a clear north-to-south rail route. Twelve calendar days provide 11 hotel nights, with four nights in Paris, two in Lyon, two in Provence and three in Nice.

Keep the route moving in one direction

Arrive in Paris and depart from Nice, or reverse the full route when flights work better. Returning to Paris removes much of the final Riviera time and creates another long station day.

The three intercity stages use major rail corridors, but departure times, station names and direct services vary by date. Check the operator results before assigning an attraction to a transfer day.

Build Paris around four measured days

Use arrival time around the accommodation and give each full day one main museum, monument or district. Paris is too large for a checklist that crosses the city several times.

Versailles can replace one complete Paris day. Travellers who want several large museums should remain in the city and add Versailles only after extending the stay.

Use Lyon as more than a rail pause

Two nights support an arrival route and one full day through Vieux Lyon, the Presqu’île or a selected museum. The slopes towards Fourvière need a transport or walking choice before the day begins.

Do not add a distant food or wine excursion to this short stay. Lyon itself needs enough time between the two long-distance train stages.

Choose an exact Provence base

Provence is a region, not one station. This route uses Avignon or another confirmed rail base with two nights, then limits the full day to the city and one reachable nearby area.

Village circuits require a current bus plan, organised excursion or car. Avoid listing several hill towns without proving how the complete outward and return journey works.

Finish with three nights in Nice

Nice receives an arrival afternoon, one full city day and one flexible Riviera day before departure. Keep the old town, seafront and hill routes in sensible groups.

Èze can fill the final complete day when its village transport is checked. Monaco, Antibes and Cannes are alternatives, not additions to the same excursion.
