Estonia island ferries through the year

How seasons, vehicle demand and the limited inter-island service affect routes to Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.

Saaremaa and Hiiumaa have dependable mainland gateways, but that does not make every two-island route equally simple. The direct connection between the islands has a more limited schedule, while vehicle demand changes sharply with season and holidays.

The two mainland gateways

Saaremaa is reached through the Virtsu to Kuivastu route, with the road continuing across Muhu. Hiiumaa uses the Rohuküla to Heltermaa crossing. Both routes operate beyond summer, although frequency and available vehicle space vary.

The inter-island link is the key

The Triigi to Sõru sailing turns Saaremaa and Hiiumaa into a clean circuit when it operates on a useful date. Confirm the exact timetable before choosing accommodation. Without it, the alternative returns through the mainland and adds driving and two separate crossings.

Reserve the journeys that matter

Foot passengers have more flexibility than drivers, but onward buses still need checking. Reserve a car place for weekends, public holidays and popular summer departures. Leave margin around the final ferry if it connects to a flight or long-distance journey.
