Saaremaa Island travel guide

Saaremaa combines Kuressaare’s castle and spa tradition with windmills, meteorite history, limestone coast and long rural roads.

Traditional windmills at Angla on Saaremaa Island

Use Kuressaare as the service base, then choose one side of Saaremaa per day so that rural stops and coastal walks have enough time.

Begin in Kuressaare

Kuressaare provides the island’s main accommodation, restaurants and bus links, with the episcopal castle as its central historic site. Give the town a full day before using it only as a place to sleep between rural drives.

The waterfront, park and old streets are compact enough to explore on foot. A car adds little inside town but becomes useful for the island’s widely separated villages, coast and nature sites.

Choose one rural circuit at a time

Angla’s windmills and the Kaali area can form part of an inland day when current opening arrangements fit. Western Saaremaa offers a different route through quieter roads and exposed coastal landscapes.

Avoid building one island-wide checklist. Road time, museum visits and short walks quickly fill the day, and some smaller venues operate limited or seasonal hours.

Treat Muhu as part of the journey

The mainland ferry reaches Kuivastu on Muhu, followed by a road causeway to Saaremaa. Muhu’s villages and St Catherine’s Church justify their own stop when the itinerary has a spare half day or overnight.

Reserve a vehicle place for busy sailings when advised and arrive with the operator’s check-in margin. Coaches can travel through the ferry connection, but rural Saaremaa still requires a narrower route than a car trip.

Questions about Saaremaa Island

How many days do I need on Saaremaa?

Three days gives Kuressaare and two rural directions. Four or five days is better for coast and slower village stops.

Can I reach Saaremaa without a car?

Yes by coach through the ferry, but rural sightseeing needs careful bus planning, cycling or arranged transport.

Is Muhu the same island as Saaremaa?

No. Muhu is a separate island linked to Saaremaa by a causeway and to the mainland by ferry.
