About Estonian Islands
Why explore Estonian Islands
The islands slow the pace of an Estonia itinerary. Kuressaare provides the strongest town base, Hiiumaa opens into long rural circuits, Muhu rewards a stop beyond the ferry road, and Kihnu centres on a living cultural landscape.
Their shared maritime character should not hide real differences. A good island plan chooses the places that fit the available days and confirms every crossing before arranging accommodation.
Plan the region
Use Saaremaa for a first three-to-five-day island stay. Add Hiiumaa only when the direct seasonal sailing or mainland return fits without losing a full day to transfers.
Muhu works naturally with Saaremaa, while Kihnu is a separate journey from the Pärnu side. Each deserves its correct name, culture and route.

Open guideMuhu Island
Muhu is a low, rural island of old stone churches, villages and coastal roads between the mainland ferry and Saaremaa.
Open guideKihnu Island
Kihnu is a small inhabited island whose living cultural traditions, villages and seafaring history are recognised by UNESCO.

Plan by area
Saaremaa
Kuressaare, windmills, inland heritage and long coastal roads make this the most varied first island.
Hiiumaa
Historic lighthouses, wooded peninsulas and quiet beaches suit a slower rural circuit.
Muhu
Villages and medieval heritage turn the mainland ferry island into more than a transit road.
Kihnu
UNESCO-recognised living culture and compact cycling routes require a respectful, ferry-led plan.

The markers show separate island journeys. Muhu and Saaremaa share a road link, while Hiiumaa and Kihnu depend on different ferry plans.

What fits into your trip
One island only
Choose Saaremaa for the widest first route, Hiiumaa for lighthouses and quiet coast, or Kihnu for a smaller cultural stay. Adding another island usually spends too much of a short trip on ports, check-in and repeated accommodation changes.
Saaremaa and Muhu
Use Kuressaare as the main base, give rural Saaremaa two focused directions and stop on Muhu around the mainland sailing. This creates variety without depending on a seasonal link or forcing a long return across the large island.
Two large islands
Combine Saaremaa and Hiiumaa with confirmed ferry dates and at least three nights on each. Keep one flexible day for weather or a mainland connection, and add Muhu naturally rather than treating Kihnu as another hurried box to tick.
Link the stops sensibly
Routes and day trips
Plan the sailings before the road. Core mainland routes are more dependable than direct island links, which can be seasonal.
Suggested regional routes
Saaremaa from Kuressaare
Give the town one day, then use separate days for inland heritage and one coastal direction.
Open destination guideHiiumaa lighthouse circuit
Group sites by peninsula and use Kärdla for services without crossing the island repeatedly.
Open destination guideMuhu beyond the ferry
Pause for villages and St Catherine’s Church before continuing over the causeway to Saaremaa.
Open destination guideKihnu at local pace
Cycle a small route, visit the museum and allow the ferry schedule to set the shape of the stay.

Saaremaa and Hiiumaa island itinerary
Eight days divide Saaremaa and Hiiumaa into two unhurried island stays, with the direct inter-island ferry used only when its sailing is confirmed.

Getting around Estonian Islands
Ferries set the timetable, while cars and bicycles shape travel on land. Local buses serve residents but rarely create complete visitor circuits on the larger islands.
Core ferries
Use current Praamid information for Muhu, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa mainland routes.
Seasonal links
Confirm direct island-to-island services for the exact date and keep a mainland alternative.
Island roads
Allow for distance, wind and limited services when driving or cycling outside the main towns.
Choose dates that suit the route
When to visit
June to September gives the broadest visitor services and ferry options, along with the strongest accommodation pressure.
Winter core ferries still require weather awareness, and many rural attractions reduce their hours.

Planning checks
Do not assume a direct ferry
Island-to-island routes may be seasonal or unsuitable for the chosen day.
Reserve enough road time
Saaremaa and Hiiumaa are much larger than their quiet traffic first suggests.
Respect living communities
Muhu and Kihnu are inhabited cultural landscapes, not staged visitor attractions.
