Hiiumaa Island travel guide

Hiiumaa is a quiet, wooded island of historic lighthouses, long peninsulas, small harbours and uncrowded Baltic shores.

Start planning

Allow several days for Hiiumaa because its lighthouses, beaches and settlements are spread across an island where the road journey matters as much as each stop.

Plan the island by peninsula

Kõpu, Tahkuna and the eastern harbour area sit in different directions. Group one lighthouse with nearby coast or woodland instead of driving from one end of Hiiumaa to the other for a series of short photographs.

Kärdla is the island’s main service town and a sensible place for shops, meals and accommodation. It works well as a base for the northern and eastern parts of Hiiumaa, while Kõpu and the western coast require longer road journeys.

Leave room for weather and access

Lighthouse opening arrangements and stair access vary, while beaches and forest tracks can be exposed or unpaved. Check the specific site before setting out and keep one easier coastal or museum alternative.

Cycling suits experienced riders in calm conditions, but wind and distance can turn a simple route into a long day. Carry water, repair essentials and an offline map when leaving the larger settlements.

Build around the core ferry

The dependable mainland route links Rohuküla with Heltermaa. Rohuküla lies outside Haapsalu, so include the port transfer and check-in time before treating the ferry as a connection between the two town centres.

Direct sailings between Hiiumaa and Saaremaa are seasonal and should be checked for the exact date. When they do not fit, return through the mainland rather than forcing an island circuit around an assumed service.

Only when the seasonal service fits. Check the operator and keep the mainland route as the reliable alternative.
