Ways to adjust the route

Return via Kuivastu to Virtsu, drive to Rohuküla and take the TS Laevad ferry to Heltermaa; allow 300 to 420 minutes plus any sailing wait.

Saaremaa and Hiiumaa reward a slow route rather than a checklist of lighthouses and beaches. Eight days allows a proper base in Kuressaare, time for Saaremaa’s western landscapes, and three quieter nights on Hiiumaa.

Let the ferries set the route

The seasonal sailing between Triigi and Sõru creates the cleanest two-island journey. Confirm it for the exact travel date before booking the second island. When it is not operating, return through the mainland and treat the longer transfer as a full travel day.

Mainland ferries serve both islands throughout the year, but vehicle space and frequency vary. Travellers taking a car should reserve busy summer and holiday crossings early.

Choose useful island bases

Kuressaare is the practical base for Saaremaa because it combines accommodation, restaurants and the castle with access to rural loops. On Hiiumaa, choose accommodation according to the ferry port and places you actually intend to visit. Distances look short, but sparse services make a poor base expensive in time.

A route for drivers

A car makes this itinerary far easier. Without one, build separate trips around Kuressaare and Kärdla, then check every bus and ferry connection before paying for rooms. Cutting Hiiumaa is better than forcing both islands into an unreliable public-transport plan.
