Haapsalu travel guide

Haapsalu is a compact western spa town of wooden houses, a large medieval castle and a quiet promenade around the bay.

Start planning
Medieval walls and grounds of Haapsalu Castle

Give Haapsalu a full day for the castle, old streets and waterfront, then treat the Hiiumaa ferry as a separate journey through Rohuküla harbour.

Walk from the castle to the bay

Haapsalu Castle dominates the historic centre and deserves time beyond a photograph of the walls. From there, wooden houses and small streets lead toward the promenade, where pavilions and shallow-water views create a slower side of the town.

The route is compact, but castle surfaces and older thresholds can be uneven. Check access at the chosen museum or spa if step-free movement matters, and keep a simple waterfront alternative for poor weather.

Stay overnight for the quieter pace

A day trip covers the main sights, while one or two nights leave room for spa time, a museum and an evening on the bay. Festival weekends can change the atmosphere and room supply, so review the town calendar before booking.

Winter is very quiet and some visitor services reduce their hours. The calm can suit a spa break, but it should not be planned around a full summer programme of cafés and waterfront activities.

Continue to Hiiumaa with care

Ferries to Hiiumaa leave from Rohuküla, several kilometres west of Haapsalu. Include the port transfer and check-in time, and reserve a vehicle space when the operator recommends it for busy dates.

Matsalu lies south of the town and needs a separate nature day. Its birding areas, visitor centre and coastal meadows are dispersed, so a current route matters more than a long list of observation points.

Questions about Haapsalu

Can Haapsalu be a day trip from Tallinn?

Does the Hiiumaa ferry leave from central Haapsalu?

What is the main sight?

The castle is the largest historic site, while the wooden town and waterfront make the visit feel complete.
