Matsalu National Park travel guide

Matsalu protects a shallow bay, reed beds and coastal meadows on one of the Baltic region’s important bird migration routes.

Start planning

Plan Matsalu around the visitor centre, one observation area and the current migration season rather than trying to tour every tower around the bay.

Begin with the current nature information

Matsalu covers a broad bay and surrounding landscapes rather than one compact reserve entrance. The visitor centre provides the best starting context for habitats, open routes and recent conditions before choosing an observation area.

Bird movement changes with season, weather and water level. A quiet landscape can still be ecologically important, so do not judge the visit only by species counts or promise a particular sighting in advance.

Keep the wetland day small

Observation towers and coastal meadows are spread around the bay. Select one side and a few compatible stops, then leave enough time for slow roads, walking and patient observation.

Use marked paths, respect temporary closures and keep away from nesting or feeding areas. Binoculars reduce pressure to approach wildlife and make distant views across the open landscape more useful.

Connect through West Estonia

Haapsalu is a practical town base to the north, while Pärnu lies farther south. Public transport does not form a sightseeing loop around the park, making a car or arranged nature trip the clearest option.

Do not combine Matsalu and Soomaa in one day. The parks protect different wetland systems and sit far enough apart that each deserves its own route and current condition check.

Questions about Matsalu National Park

When is the best time for birds at Matsalu?

Spring and autumn migration are important, but exact timing varies. Check current official and local information.

Can I visit without a guide?

Yes on open public routes, starting with current visitor-centre advice and respecting all habitat restrictions.

Which town is a useful base?

Haapsalu works well for the northern side. A rural stay can reduce driving for early observation.
