Soomaa National Park travel guide

Soomaa protects raised bogs, forest and floodplain rivers, with boardwalks and seasonal canoe routes between Pärnu and Viljandi.

Choose Soomaa for a named trail or a responsibly guided water trip, and let current water, weather and access conditions determine the day.

Begin with an official trail

Boardwalk routes provide the clearest first experience of Soomaa’s raised bogs, pools and open horizons. Select the trail by length, surface and current condition, then stay on the route to protect fragile wet ground.

Remote paths require ordinary outdoor preparation even when the distance looks short. Carry water, use suitable footwear and keep enough daylight for the drive or arranged pickup after the walk.

Understand the fifth season

Spring floods can spread across meadows, forests and local roads, creating the period known as the fifth season. Its timing and scale vary, so it should never be promised for a particular week far in advance.

Canoe trips require current local knowledge, suitable equipment and a responsible operator when conditions are unfamiliar. High water may open a route while also making access more demanding, and closures must be respected.

Arrange the rural journey

Pärnu and Viljandi are the main gateway towns, but neither provides a frequent public transport circuit through the park. A car, booked transfer or guided trip is the practical choice for most first visits.

Do not combine Soomaa with distant Matsalu in one nature day. A local overnight allows an evening or early walk and gives weather-dependent plans room to change without losing the whole western route.

Questions about Soomaa National Park

When is Soomaa’s fifth season?

It depends on snowmelt and rainfall, often in spring. Check current park and operator information rather than choosing a fixed date months ahead.

Can I reach Soomaa by ordinary bus?

Public transport is limited and does not link the main trails well. Arrange a car, transfer or guide.

Can I walk independently?

Yes on suitable open official trails, with current route information and normal outdoor preparation.
