About West Estonia
Why explore West Estonia
The west offers more than Estonia’s best-known summer beach. Pärnu and Haapsalu have different town characters, while Soomaa and Matsalu reveal inland bogs, floodplain rivers, coastal meadows and bird migration.
It also forms the practical gateway to several islands. Ferry ports sit outside the main town centres, making careful route planning especially valuable here.
Plan the region
Choose Pärnu for a larger beach and spa base, or Haapsalu for a compact castle town and access toward Hiiumaa. Split the stay only when both suit the onward route.
Soomaa and Matsalu protect different landscapes in different parts of the region. Give either park a dedicated day rather than attempting both.

Plan by area
Pärnu
The region’s main summer base combines beach, parks, spa hotels and a compact historic centre.
Haapsalu
A quieter castle and spa town near the separate road connection to Rohuküla ferry harbour.
Soomaa
Raised bogs and floodplain rivers require a named trail or current guided water plan.
Matsalu
A shallow bay and coastal meadows support seasonal bird migration and a network of dispersed observation areas.

The towns and wetlands sit in separate parts of the west. Each nature area needs its own access and condition check.
Match the route to your time
What fits into your trip
One town and one wetland
Base in Pärnu or Haapsalu for two nights, then dedicate one day to Soomaa or Matsalu. This keeps the route small enough for current weather and access information to guide the nature plan without losing the character of the town.
Pärnu and Haapsalu
Give each town its own stay and select one park that fits the season. Use the journey between them as a transfer, not as a reason to add several distant coastal and wetland stops to an already full day.
West coast and island gateway
Combine both towns with one dedicated nature day and continue toward Hiiumaa or Kihnu only after confirming the ferry. The spare time protects the route from poor birding weather, high water or a sailing that does not match an old schedule.
Link the stops sensibly
Routes and day trips
The west works as a line between town bases and specific nature days. Do not zigzag between inland Soomaa, coastal Matsalu and separate ferry ports.
Suggested regional routes
Pärnu beach and spa
Use one day for the beach and park district and another for the centre or a spa visit.
Open destination guideHaapsalu castle and bay
Give the castle and wooden centre a full day, then leave for Rohuküla only when the ferry journey begins.
Open destination guideSoomaa trail or water route
Choose one official route and let current flood, trail and weather information decide whether walking or guided canoeing is suitable.
Open destination guideMatsalu observation route
Start with current visitor information and use one side of the bay, respecting habitat restrictions throughout the day.

Getting around West Estonia
Coaches reach Pärnu and Haapsalu. Wetland trails, observation towers and ferry ports require separate connections, with a car or arranged transfer often the most practical choice.
Intercity coaches
Use dated schedules for the main towns and check where the station sits relative to accommodation.
Nature transfers
Arrange a car, guide or pickup because public services do not form park circuits.
Ferry connections
Include the journey to the port, operator check-in and any vehicle reservation in the route.
Choose dates that suit the route
When to visit
Summer favours town and beach stays, while spring and autumn are important for migration and changing wetland conditions.
Flood timing, bird movement and ferry frequency vary. Recheck the relevant official source close to travel.

Planning checks
Keep the two parks separate
Soomaa and Matsalu are too far apart and too different for one useful nature day.
Find the actual port
Rohuküla and other ferry departures are not located in the historic town centre.
Do not promise wildlife
Migration and water conditions change, so use current information and patient observation.
