Stop on Muhu for its own villages and heritage rather than treating the island only as the road between Kuivastu harbour and Saaremaa.
Look beyond the ferry road
Most travellers arrive at Kuivastu and continue west, but Muhu’s interior holds villages, traditional farm landscapes and the medieval St Catherine’s Church. A half day reveals a different island from the traffic corridor.
Small heritage places may keep limited hours, so choose one or two confirmed visits and leave time for the rural setting. Respect private yards and do not treat working villages as open-air displays.
Decide whether to stop or stay
A stop works well on the way to Kuressaare when the ferry arrival leaves enough daylight. An overnight suits cyclists and travellers who want quieter roads after day traffic has moved toward Saaremaa.
Muhu and Saaremaa are linked by a causeway, but they remain separate islands with different local identities. Keep the name clear in headings, captions and route notes rather than describing every Muhu stop as Saaremaa.
Fit Muhu around the sailing
The Virtsu to Kuivastu ferry is the main public gateway. Check current departure times, arrive within the operator’s rules and reserve a vehicle on busy dates when advised.
Coaches continue through Muhu toward Kuressaare, which limits spontaneous village stops. A car, bicycle or arranged local transfer is more useful when Muhu itself is part of the trip.

Questions about Muhu Island
Is Muhu part of Saaremaa?
No. It is a separate island connected to Saaremaa by a causeway and to the mainland by ferry.
How long should I spend on Muhu?
A half day covers one or two stops. An overnight allows quieter villages and a small cycling or road route.
Can I stop when travelling by coach?
Through coaches are designed for onward travel. A separate local plan is needed for village stops.
