Upper or lower Èze

Èze village stands high above the Mediterranean, while Èze-sur-Mer and its railway station sit on the coast far below. This separation causes many planning mistakes. The medieval lanes and exotic garden suit a focused half-day, while the steep Nietzsche path should be attempted only with suitable conditions, footwear and enough time.

Know which Èze you are reaching

The hill village and coastal station are not beside one another. Buses from Nice, Monaco and local points can serve the upper settlement, while regional trains stop at Èze-sur-Mer below. Read the destination and stop name carefully before starting the journey.

Walk the village before peak crowds

Èze has a small network of steep lanes, workshops and stone passages rather than a long monument circuit. Early or later visits are calmer. Keep pathways clear for residents and businesses, and allow for steps and uneven surfaces throughout the upper settlement.

Check the exotic garden directly

The Jardin Exotique occupies the highest part of the village and provides the broadest coast views. It uses admission and has its own opening arrangements. The final climb is steep, so leave enough time and confirm accessibility instead of treating the garden as a quick viewpoint.

Take the Nietzsche path seriously

The path links the village with Èze-sur-Mer through a long, steep descent or climb on rough ground. Heat, rain, footwear and fitness matter. Carry water, avoid the hottest hours, and do not use it as an automatic connection with luggage or a tight train.

Build the return before arrival

Coast trains and upper-village buses use separate corridors and schedules. A one-way walk can combine them, but only after checking the correct stop and final service. Taxis may be limited during busy periods, while road traffic can delay buses.

Keep the Riviera day focused

Èze fits well from Nice or Monaco as a half-day village visit or a full day including the coast and path. Adding several more Riviera towns turns the trip into station collecting. Choose one neighbouring base and give Èze enough time for its gradients and views.

Questions about Èze

Is Èze station beside the village?

No. The station is at Èze-sur-Mer on the coast, far below the hilltop village.

Should I take a bus or train?

Use a bus for the upper village and a train for the coast. Combine them only with a planned path or transfer.

How difficult is the Nietzsche path?

It is steep and rough, with heat and weather adding difficulty. Use suitable footwear and carry water.

Can I visit Èze from Nice?

Yes by bus to the village or train to the coast. Check the dated return and exact stop.
