Vis is a comparatively remote central Dalmatian island with two principal bases, Vis Town and Komiža, plus beaches and military history spread along rural roads.
Choose Vis Town or Komiža as the main base
Vis Town surrounds a large harbour and receives the principal ferries. Komiža sits on the western coast with a smaller fishing-town atmosphere and different boat excursions.
The road between them crosses the island, so changing bases for a short stay is rarely worthwhile. Select the town that supports the main activity and use a bus or taxi for the other.
Treat boat excursions as weather-dependent
Trips to sea caves, beaches and nearby islands depend on wind, sea state and operator decisions. Do not build the entire stay around one non-refundable excursion.
Use licensed operators and confirm the meeting point, swimming expectations and cancellation terms. A land-based alternative keeps the day useful if boats do not leave.
Respect the island’s pace and limits
Beaches and historic sites are dispersed, and some roads are narrow or steep. Scooter hire is not a substitute for suitable experience, insurance and protective equipment.
Accommodation and restaurants can be limited outside the main season. Match the return ferry and final Split connection before confirming the last night.
Timing and practical limits in Vis Island
Late May to September has the broadest connections. July and August bring heat and high demand, while shoulder months need closer checks on boats, restaurants and tours.

Questions about Vis Island
How many nights should I spend on Vis?
At least three nights. Four or five provide a useful weather margin and time for both Vis Town and Komiža.
Which town is the best base?
Vis Town is easiest for the ferry, while Komiža suits a western-island stay and selected boat trips.
Do I need a car?
No for a focused stay using buses, taxis and boats. A car helps with dispersed beaches only when parking and narrow roads are understood.
