About Three Cities
Why explore Three Cities
The Three Cities show Grand Harbour from the opposite side of Valletta and reveal a different scale of fortifications, docks and residential life. Birgu holds the main visitor sites, but Senglea and Cospicua make the harbour story complete.
The area can be walked as one connected district without changing transport between each city. Following the water and peninsulas gives a clearer route than treating every name as a separate day trip.
Plan the region
Start in Birgu when Fort St Angelo or the historic lanes are a priority. Continue around Dockyard Creek through Cospicua, then finish along Senglea’s peninsula at Gardjola Gardens.
A ferry from Valletta can provide the cleanest arrival, but schedules and weather remain variable. The bus network creates a dependable alternative when planned with the current journey information.

3 guidesBirgu
Birgu combines Fort St Angelo, a compact historic core and a lively marina at the most visitor-rich end of the Three Cities.
Open guideSenglea
Senglea is a narrow fortified peninsula whose residential streets lead to Gardjola Gardens and a wide view across Grand Harbour.
Open guideCospicua
Cospicua connects Birgu and Senglea around Dockyard Creek, combining restored waterfront space, fortifications and active local streets.

Plan by area
Birgu
Birgu has Fort St Angelo, the Collachio lanes, museums and the marina. Give it the largest share of the day when historic interiors matter.
Cospicua
Cospicua links the peninsulas through the dock area and extends inland toward major fortifications. Its working-town character should not be skipped between headline stops.
Senglea
Senglea narrows toward Gardjola Gardens and a broad harbour view. Residential streets and the dock edge make it quieter than Birgu’s visitor core.

Birgu and Senglea occupy neighbouring peninsulas, while Cospicua links them around Dockyard Creek. The markers support one connected harbour walk.
Match the route to your time
What fits into your trip
A focused Birgu visit
Walk the Collachio and waterfront, then choose Fort St Angelo or one museum. This is enough for Birgu alone, not for all Three Cities. Return another day or omit the claim that the full district has been covered.
All Three Cities on foot
Begin in Birgu, follow Dockyard Creek through Cospicua and finish in Senglea. Include one major interior and a meal, leaving enough time for the final ferry or bus rather than rushing the last peninsula.
Harbour history in depth
Use the first day for Birgu’s fort and museums. Spend the second on Cospicua, Senglea and a slower dock walk, or pair the district with a separate Valletta harbour perspective.
Link the stops sensibly
Routes and day trips
The strongest route follows the connected harbour edge. Fix one major Birgu interior, then let Cospicua and Senglea provide the urban and viewpoint sections of the day.
Suggested regional routes
Fort and old Birgu
Start before the strongest heat, choose Fort St Angelo or another major interior, then walk the Collachio and marina without rushing the residential lanes.
Open destination guideDockyard Creek and Cospicua
Continue around the dock basin and pause in the town centre. This middle section explains the maritime scale that a Birgu-only visit misses.
Open destination guideSenglea peninsula
Walk toward Gardjola Gardens for the harbour outlook, then return to the ferry or bus with enough daylight and timetable margin.

Getting around Three Cities
The three centres are close enough to walk, though slopes, heat and exposed waterfronts add effort. Ferry and bus connections determine the best starting and finishing points.
Ferry
Use the current Valletta Ferry Services schedule and confirm the Three Cities landing. Keep a bus route available if conditions interrupt the crossing.
Walking
Follow the harbour and peninsula streets with water and sun protection. Add inland fortifications only when time and mobility support the extra slopes.
Buses
Several routes serve the district from Valletta and nearby areas. Check the final useful return rather than relying on an old route number.
Choose dates that suit the route
When to visit
Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable conditions for the full walking route. In summer, begin early and build in shade and museum time.
Wind may affect ferry service even when the streets remain pleasant. The bus alternative keeps the Three Cities workable on many such days.

Planning checks
Do not stop after Birgu
Birgu has the headline sites, but Cospicua and Senglea are essential to a page that promises the Three Cities.
Check museum access
Fort and museum hours can change or be affected by events. Choose one priority and verify it directly.
Protect the return connection
Allow enough time to reach the correct ferry landing or bus stop after Senglea. Do not base the evening on a tight final service.
Quick answers
Questions about Three Cities
Can I walk all Three Cities?
Yes. A full day allows the harbour route and one major interior without rushing.
Where should I start?
Birgu is the strongest start for historic sites. Reverse the route if the current ferry or bus works better.
Is Cospicua worth visiting?
Yes. It provides the dock and working-town connection between Birgu and Senglea.
Can I combine the Three Cities with Valletta?
A broad overview is possible, but both sides need more than a few hours when museums are included.
