This broad eastern region includes spa country, vineyards and historic towns. The first release concentrates on Ptuj and Celje, two compact places that add medieval streets and castles to a Ljubljana or Maribor rail route.

Ptuj sits off the direct Ljubljana to Maribor line and usually involves a connection. Celje lies on the main corridor and is easier to add without a car.

Use the rail corridor

Celje is a straightforward stop between Ljubljana and Maribor. Ptuj needs more timetable attention but rewards an overnight stay when day-trip connections are awkward.

Separate town and castle time

Both destinations have hilltop castles above their historic centres. Allow for the climb, opening hours and weather rather than treating the viewpoint as a quick station stop.

Future regional depth

Spa towns, wine areas and rural landscapes can later sit under this hub. They need separate transport and accessibility research before publication.

A practical itinerary

  1. Day 1: stop in Celje for the old centre and castle.
  2. Days 2 to 3: stay in Ptuj for the old town, castle and Drava river setting.
  3. Day 4: continue to Maribor or return towards Ljubljana.

Without a car

Both towns have rail stations and walkable centres. Castle climbs and rural extensions require more effort or local transport.

Season

Town visits work year-round. Festival periods can change accommodation demand, road access and opening hours, particularly in Ptuj.

Places to add to your map

  • Celje: Main-line rail stop with a hilltop castle.
  • Ptuj: Historic Drava town reached via regional rail or bus.
