Potsdam is close enough for an independent day from Berlin, but Sanssouci Park is larger than it appears on a map. A useful visit starts with one reserved palace and leaves the rest of the day flexible.
Build the day around Sanssouci Park
Sanssouci is a palace landscape rather than one building. The park, terraces and approaches take time, so choose the first palace entry before deciding how much of central Potsdam can follow.
Arrive early enough to find the correct entrance and understand the distance to the next stop. A rushed sequence of interiors leaves little time for the gardens that connect them.

Choose one main palace interior
Sanssouci Palace uses timed admission. Treat that slot as the fixed point of the day and check the official palace page for current opening arrangements before choosing the train from Berlin.
The New Palace stands at the western side of the park. It can replace another interior or form the end of a long park walk, but visiting every major palace in one day is not a useful target.

Add central Potsdam only when time allows
The Dutch Quarter, Brandenburger Strasse and Alter Markt form a separate city route. Add one compact area after Sanssouci rather than crossing Potsdam several times.
Travellers more interested in streets and local history can shorten the palace visit and give the centre equal time. The day still needs one clear starting area and one finishing area.
Travel from Berlin and protect the return
Regional trains and the S-Bahn connect Berlin with Potsdam, but the best departure depends on the starting district and planned park entrance. Check the whole journey, including the local tram or bus.
Use a return that leaves another practical connection in reserve. Evening engineering work or a missed local bus is easier to manage when the final acceptable train is not the only plan.
Walking distances and access
The park covers a large area with slopes, gravel and long distances between buildings. Travellers with limited mobility should select fewer stops and check the accessible entrance for each palace separately.
One full day is enough for a focused Sanssouci visit and a short city walk. Stay overnight only when several palace interiors, museums or additional Potsdam districts are important.
